2019 Renault Duster: New vs Old

by Jagdev Kalsi Dates: 13 Jul 2019

2019 Renault Duster vs Old Duster

It has been over seven years since the Duster has been in India and it is now in the last leg of its current generation. But before the second generation Duster arrives, Renault has given the compact SUV a makeover to remain competitive in the segment against the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Nissan Kicks.

The 2019 Duster not only gets cosmetic changes but some feature updates too. In the process, it has lost some variants, and gained some, to compensate for the ones omitted. We list the differences between the 2019 Duster and its old version to find out whether it has become a more attractive package or not.

2019 Duster New vs Old Specifications

    Powertrain

The Renault Duster sees no change in the powertrain department. So, it continues to come with three engine options -- 1.5-litre, 106PS petrol, 1.5-litre, 85PS diesel and 1.5-litre 110PS diesel engine. The petrol engine and the more powerful diesel engine come with the option of an automatic transmission as well, along with a manual transmission. The petrol engine is, however, coupled with a CVT while the diesel version comes paired with an AMT. Renault continues to offer AWD option with the 110PS diesel engine.

    Dimensions

The 2019 Duster is 45mm longer than the older version, but the rest of the dimensions remain as is. Revised bumper design is likely to have increased its overall length.

    Looks - exterior and interior

As far as its exterior design is concerned, most of the changes are concentrated at the front end. The 2019 Duster gets a revised front bumper, a new front grille and redesigned bonnet apart from attaining projector headlamps and DRLs. Design of the fog lamps has also been revised. Changes at the side are limited to just the alloy wheels, which get a new design.

The Duster now gets an all-black cabin instead of the black-beige one before. While the dashboard layout is similar to the outgoing model, the circular central air-con vents have given way to rectangular units. There are now blue inserts in the cabin as well.

While the Duster continues to come in seven exterior colour options, Renault has removed Fiery Red and Woodland Brown from its palette and added Caspian Blue and Mahogany Brown. Other exterior colour options include orange, silver, grey, bronze and white.

The Duster continues to come in two variants with the petrol-manual powertrain -- RXE and RXS. Prices of both these variants remain unchanged, however, Renault has tweaked the feature list of the variants.

The 2019 Duster comes equipped with projector headlamps, rear parking sensors and dual front airbags in all the variants. So the base variant also gets these features, but continues to come at the same price as before, making it more value-for-money now.

The same can’t be said about the RXS variant, which does come at the same price as before, but appears to carry less value in terms of the feature packaging. It used to come equipped with features like alloy wheels, fog lamps and rear wiper and washer. The only features added instead of these are projector headlamps, cooled storage and reverse parking sensors.

The Duster petrol’s automatic version also costs the same as before. It now features projector headlamps, cooled storage and reverse parking sensors instead of fog lamps and rear wiper and washer. The additional features appear to be a fair trade-off for the ones omitted, although rear washer and wiper and fog lamps were quite useful features.

Like in the petrol Duster’s case, the diesel version’s base variant gets more features and the increment in price is only Rs 10,000, making it a more value-for-money proposition than before.

There’s a more extensive variant rejig in the diesel Duster’s variant list compared to that of the petrol’s. The 85PS RXZ variant, for example, has made way for the RXS variant with the 110PS engine. That makes buying the best-equipped diesel-powered Duster more expensive.

The 110PS version with the RXZ variant doesn’t see a price change, but gets cooled storage and tweeters, clearly making it more value for money than before.

The Duster AWD, which was previously available in the top RXZ variant only, is now available in the RXS Option variant. While that makes the AWD version cheaper by Rs 60,000, it also means that it is less equipped than before.

The Duster AMT, on the other hand, is now available in RXZ variant only and not the RXS variant, like before. So, buyers will get to have more features in the diesel-automatic Duster, but they’ll have to shell out Rs 40,000 more.

    Verdict

Renault has refreshed the Duster and made some its variants more value for money than before. However, despite the changes, the Duster appears to getting a little long in the tooth now, especially when you the competition heating up with carmakers like Kia entering the compact SUV space.
