    Dimension Review

    • The S-Cross is longer than the Venue by 305mm.
    • The S-Cross is wider than the Venue by 15mm.
    • The Venue is taller than the S-Cross by 10mm.
    • The S-Cross has a longer wheelbase than the Venue; by 100mm.
    • The S-Cross has 25 litres more boot space than the Venue.
    • The Venue has 10mm more ground clearance than the S-Cross.
    • Despite what your eyes might have you believe, the Venue is only 1cm taller than the SCross.
    • Because of the S Cross’ significantly longer and slightly wider body, the S-Cross has much better overall dimensions and a slightly larger boot space too.
    • In theory, at least, the S-Cross should have better road presence but the Venue’s boxier proportions may convince otherwise. It shows you how good a job the Hyundai designers have done with the Venue to give better road presence than a physically larger car.
    • The S-Cross is as long as the Creta while the Venue has the same length as the Baleno.

    S-Cross Petrol vs Venue Petrol

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross gets a 1.5L petrol 4-cylinder engine which makes 105PS of maximum power and 138Nm of peak torque. It is available with a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque converter type automatic transmission. The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross petrol manual has a mileage of 18.55kmpl while the automatic claims to deliver a fuel efficiency figure of 18.43kmpl.

The Hyundai Venue gets a 1.2L 4-cylinder normal petrol engine that makes 83PS of maximum power and 114Nm of peak torque. It is available with a 5-speed manual transmission and returns a fuel-efficiency of 17.27kmpl. This engine is not available in higher variants and its performance is barely acceptable. So, you only get basic features if you buy the Venue with the 1.2-litre engine but it has a significant price advantage.

The turbo petrol has an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure of 18.2kmpl with the manual and 18.15kmpl with the automatic.

    Petrol Engine Review

    • The Venue turbo is more powerful than the S-Cross but the S-Cross is more powerful than the Venue 1.2.
    • The Venue's turbo has far better torque output than the S-Cross but the S-Cross has better torque than the Venue 1.2.
    • In the same fashion, the Venue 1.2’s torque-to-weight ratio is the worst in this comparison. The S-Cross’ is better but the Venue turbo offers the best torque-to-weight ratio. Therefore, the Venue turbo will offer the best drivability and in-gear acceleration.
    • The S-Cross petrol is more fuel-efficient than the Venue. Because of its hybrid technology, the S-Cross has a better mileage figure than Venue’s either engines.

Is the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross better than the Hyundai Venue?

Price of the base variant of Maruti Suzuki S-Cross is Rs. 8.39 lakh and Hyundai Venue is Rs. 6.70 lakh (both ex-showroom). The Venue is far more affordable than the Maruti S Cross but the cheaper models also get the mediocre 1.2-litre normal petrol engine. The Venue turbo is has a similar starting price as the S-Cross.

In terms of dimensions, the S-Cross is theoretically larger than the Venue. But the Venue’s boxy proportions still manage to deliver better road presence in a smaller package. Believe it or not, the Venue is only 1cm taller than the Maruti SCross.

For petrol manual powertrain, Venue's 1.2 engine offers far worse performance and fuel efficiency but it’s far more affordable too. So, it can get a pass.

The costlier, turbo engine offers far more torque and will, therefore, offer proportionately better drivability. Besides the 6-speed manual, the Venue turbo also has the option of an auto-clutch manual transmission. This only Rs. 20,000 more expensive and worth considering for buyers who want manual control over the gear selection but some relief from the clutch pedal. It’s also a whole lot cheaper than the full-automatic transmission.

Speaking of automatic transmissions, the Hyundai Venue uses a 7-speed dual-clutch auto box. It’s now and has an unknown track record of reliability. The SCross has an ancient and reliable torque converter automatic transmission but with only 4 gears. In that respect, even the manual transmission variants of the Venue turbo have 6 gears while the SCross only has 5.

On the mechanical front, the  Venue turbo has it beat in every manner except in mileage. The S Cross has slightly better fuel efficiency from its hybrid petrol engine.

In terms of features, the S Cross gets LED projector headlamps and reclining rear seatbacks. The Venue balances it out with sunroof, telematics, air purifier, TPMS and 4 extra airbags.

The Venue comes across as a better package with:

    • far better performance
    • stronger road presence
    • comparable mileage
    • more features
    • a multitude of engine and transmissions including Auto Clutch Manual Transmission (ACMT)
    • more affordable price tag
