Petrol Engine Review

  • The Rapid has a more powerful engine than the WR-V.
  • The Rapids engine produces more torque than the WR-Vs.
  • The Rapid turbo petrol manual is more fuel-efficient than the WR-V manual.
  • The Rapid has a far better engine than the WRV. The WRV’s small, normal petrol engine makes only 110Nm of torque, which peaks at a very high 4800rpm. By this point in the rev band, the Rapid is already making as much power as the WRV’s peak torque.
  • The Honda WRV’s petrol variant has a poor torque-to-weight ratio of just 99.5Nm/tonne. This figure is less than even the Renault Triber and Santro. It’s much worse than the Kwid 1.0 too.
  • Combine low torque-to-weight ratio and a peak torque RPM of 4800, and you have a car, which you’ll have to rev hard every time you want to make decent progress.

In terms of road presence, the two cars are evenly matched but with a slight tilt in the WR-V’s favour as it’s taller and wider than the Rapid.

For petrol powertrain, Rapids engine is leagues ahead of the Honda WRV in performance. It’s not just because the Rapid uses a turbo petrol engine. The Honda WRV’s heavy kerb weight, poor torque figure and peaky torque output make it worse than an entry-level hatchback with a 1.0-litre normal petrol engine. Since you’ll have to rev the engine so frequently, expect worse real-world mileage too from the Honda WRV than the Skoda Rapid.
