The Tata Altroz is about as long as the Elite i20, but it’s slightly wider - 2cm to be precise. On the flip side, it has a 7cm shorter wheelbase and has a 5mm lower ground clearance. 2020 Tata Altroz XZ vs Hyundai Elite i20 Asta - Petrol Engine Spec Comparison
The petrol engine of the Tata Altroz makes 86PS of power - the same as that of the Hyundai i20. The torque rating is also very similar - 113Nm for the Altroz and 115Nm for the i20. What’s important to note here is that the Altroz’ torque comes in considerably early at 3300rpm, while the i20 delivers its peak torque at 4000rpm. This should result in a marked improvement in the bottom end performance and city drivability of the Tata Altroz compared to the Hyundai i20.
The i20 though, has a CVT automatic transmission option, while the Altroz doesn’t have any type of automatic at the moment.

2020 Tata Altroz XZ vs Hyundai Elite i20 Asta - Diesel Engine Spec Comparison
Just like the petrol engine, the Altroz’ diesel engine’s performance is also very city-friendly with strong low- and mid-range torque output. At 90PS, the power output of the Altroz exactly matches the i20’s, while its peak torque is 20Nm lower. However, the peak torque comes in 250rpm sooner and stays put for till 3000rpm. Although the Altroz’ torque output is lower, it has a wider peak torque band than that of the i20’s.
It’s also possible that Hyundai’s 1.4-litre diesel engine pushes out a torque of 200Nm or more for a wider rev range than the Altroz. So, while the Altroz diesel may be good, but may not be Hyundai-i20 good. the i20 makes 200Nm or more torque from about 1200rpm to 3300rpm.

Unfortunately, we can’t objectively pick a clear winner as the two cars have their own individual strengths. The Tata Altroz XZ petrol engine has a stronger torque delivery, but the Hyundai’s diesel beats the Altroz’ diesel engine in the same criterion. The features are also evenly-matched, as both cars have some unique features. Similarly, their prices and dimensions are pretty even. It seems you can’t go wrong with either of these. Nevertheless, if you want to stand out, then the Tata Altroz is a better option, as there are lakhs of Hyundai i20’s already on the streets.
