2020 Tata Nexon

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Tata Nexon Facelift Diesel?

The pros or advantages of Nexon facelift diesel 2020 are:

  • Healthy torque output and satisfactory mileage from the 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine.
  • A fairly wide and tall body gives it a great road presence.
  • Best-in-class ground clearance of 209mm.
  • Best-in-class safety feature and 5-star Global NCAP rating - including for the base variant, which gets all of the critical safety equipment.
  • The XE variant doesn’t look like a base variant from the outside (gets the same headlamps and tail lamp cluster as higher variants).
  • The option of manual and AMT automatic transmissions with the diesel engine.
  • Gets a respectable number of features for its class.

The Tata Nexon facelift diesel 2020 has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • At Rs. 1.5 lakh price jump over the petrol model, the diesel engine is overpriced even for a BS6 car. Hyundai Venue’s turbo petrol and turbo diesel models have around Rs. 50,000 price difference.
  • Expensive, non-VFM XM and XZ variants.
  • It gets a non-standard music system slot. So, you can’t easily add a music system in the XE variant.
  • 6-month service interval is too short. It gives the dealer a chance to upsell at every service visit and will eventually end up costing more than other cars in the segment. 10,000km/1 year is the industry standard.

What Is The Price Of The 2020 Tata Nexon Facelift Diesel?

The 2020 Nexon facelift is available with a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AMT automatic transmission. The manual transmission is available in 6 variants - XE, XM, XZ, XZ Plus, XZ Plus (S) and XZ Plus (O). Their prices start at Rs. 8.45 lakh and go up to Rs. 11.9 lakh.

The Nexon diesel automatic is available in 4 variants - XM, XZ Plus, XZ Plus (S) and XZ Plus (O) - with prices ranging from Rs. 9.8 lakh to Rs. 12.0 lakh.

The top three variants also have the option of a dual-tone exterior colour option for an additional sum of Rs. 20,000. It’s somewhat acceptable but we’d still suggest you consider an aftermarket option if you can. It could cost you less than Rs. 20,000 and you will also save some cash on the registration fee, which is calculated on top of the ex-showroom price.

The Nexon diesel variants carry a premium of Rs. 1.5 lakh over the petrol models. This gap would have been somewhat acceptable if the petrol engine was small and without a turbo and intercooler. But when the petrol engine is also turbocharged, there’s not enough additional hardware to add to the cost of a diesel engine and it should cost less.

Take the Hyundai Venue as an example. The Venue’s comparable variants with turbo petrol manual and turbo diesel manual have a price gap ranging from Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 56,000. A reasonable asking price. The price gap swells to Rs. 1.41 - 1.62 lakh when you compare the 1.2-litre normal petrol engine and 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. Besides a higher mileage figure, in this case, there’s also a significant performance advantage in favour of the diesel engine, which greatly offsets the higher asking price.

The Nexon’s diesel automatic variants carry a premium of Rs. 60,000 over the manual models. It’s higher than expected but still reasonable considering that some diesel AMT models also get the wearable key feature.

2020 Tata Nexon Facelift Diesel XE Variant - Standard Features

The base, XE variant of the 2020 Nexon diesel costs Rs. 8.45 lakh (ex-showroom). The standard features of this variant are:

  • 2 Front Airbags
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Multi Drive Modes - Eco/City/Sport
  • LED DRLs
  • ABS
  • Traction Control
  • Front Power Windows
  • LED Tail Lamp
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • Tilt-adjustable Steering
  • Umbrella Holder in Front Doors
  • Body Coloured Bumpers
  • Seat Belt Reminder
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Digital Instrument Cluster
  • Flat-folding Rear Seat
  • Black ORVM w/ Turn Indicator
  • Manual AC
  • Door Side Body Cladding
  • ISOFIX
  • Halogen Projector Headlamps
  • Flat-bottom Steering
  • Black Door Handles

The base variant skips all the functional features in favour of safety kit. It even wins in the style department as the base variant also gets projector headlamps, LED DRLs, LED tail lamps, all of which take the style quotient to the next level for a base variant. No other base variant in the segment offers this many safety and style features.

If you find the Rs. 1.5 lakh price difference for the diesel engine acceptable, then the Nexon XE diesel is worth considering for the safety and style features. However, we’d not recommend it to most buyers as it doesnt have enough functional features to offer a decent ownership experience. Some of the features you might miss in the XE are:

  • Remote central locking
  • Rear camera
  • Music system
  • Steering-mounted controls
  • Rear power windows

The XE variant is certainly worth buying but only for those who can’t stretch their budget further. Moreover, it’s worth noting that it doesn’t have a standard music system slot. So, you can only install a custom made music system in this car, which will cost a bit more and is not as easy to source.

2020 Tata Nexon Facelift Diesel XE vs XM

The XM variant of the Tata Nexon facelift costs Rs. 9.2 lakh, which is 75,000 more than the XE. For this additional price, you get the following notable features:

  • Music system
  • 4 speakers
  • Rear power windows
  • Power adjustable and folding mirrors
  • Wheel covers
  • Roof rails
  • Remote central locking

The asking price is too high considering the additional features. So, we’d rather suggest you consider one of the higher variants or buy the XE variant and accessorize as per your needs. The XM variant of the Nexon diesel is not a value for money option and not worth buying.

The XM is the most affordable variant with an automatic transmission. The Nexon diesel XMA automatic costs Rs. 9.8 lakh - Rs. 60,000 more than the XM manual.

Since this is the most affordable option they have, the XM diesel automatic variant is worth buying. It also gets some of the must-have features. Unfortunately, the automatic is not available in the XZ variant, so the price jump will be higher for the XZ Plus.

2020 Tata Nexon Facelift Diesel XM vs XZ

The XZ variant of the Nexon costs Rs. 10.2 lakh, which is Rs. 1.0 lakh more than the XM. for the additional sum, you get the following notable features:

  • Reverse Parking Camera
  • 7-inch Touchscreen Infotainment System by Harman with 8 Speakers
  • Cooled Glovebox
  • Front Fog Lamps w/ Cornering Assistance
  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Fast USB Charger
  • Steering Mounted Controls
  • Rear AC Vents
  • Shark Fin Antenna
  • Voice Alerts - Low Fuel, Door Open, etc.

The asking price for the XZ variant is too high and this variant is also more than Rs. 10 lakh. So, the on-road price will be much higher than Rs. 1.0 lakh. The XZ diesel variant is not worth buying. You should either get the XE variant and accessorize to your taste or consider one of the higher variants.

2020 Tata Nexon Facelift Diesel XZ vs XZ Plus

The 2020 Nexon diesel XZ Plus variant costs Rs. 80,000 more than the XZ and is priced at Rs. 11.0 lakh. The notable additional features of the XZ Plus are:

  • Rear Defogger
  • Keyless Entry w/ Push Start Button
  • Front Armrest
  • 16-inch Machined Alloy Wheels
  • Automatic AC
  • Height-adjustable Driver Seat
  • Rear Armrest
  • Wearable key (AMT only)
  • 60:40 Split Rear Seat

Compared to the XZ, the XZ Plus justifies its asking price but it still doesn’t cover the unjustified price gap created by the XM and XZ variants. This variant adds a good mix of functional and style features and is worth considering but it’s not the best value for money option.

The Nexon XZA Plus costs Rs. 11.6 lakh, which is Rs. 1.8 lakh more than the XMA diesel automatic. All automatic diesel AMT models of the Nexon cost Rs. 60,000 more than their manual counterparts. Besides the automatic transmission, it also gets a wearable key, which is exclusively available with only the XZ+ and higher models of the Nexon with an automatic transmission. We’d recommend you get the XZ Plus (S) variant for better value for money or settle for the XMA variant and personalize it with accessories. It’s also under Rs. 10 lakh, which is another positive aspect of the XMA diesel.

2020 Tata Nexon Facelift Diesel XZ Plus vs XZ Plus (S)

The XZ Plus (S) variant was introduced only a few months ago. It gets all of the features of the XZ Plus (O) except the Internet-connected features. The XZ Plus (S) costs Rs. 60,000 more than the XZ Plus and is priced at Rs. 11.6 lakh with the manual and Rs. 12.2 lakh with the AMT automatic. The additional important features of the XZ Plus (S) variant over the XZ Plus are:

  • Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
  • Auto Headlamps
  • Rain Sensing Wipers
  • Sunroof
  • Cruise Control

This is our top-recommended Nexon diesel variant (MT and AMT) considering the value for money quotient as well as the feature mix.

2020 Tata Nexon Facelift Diesel XZ Plus (S) vs XZ Plus (O)

The top variant of the Nexon diesel costs another Rs. 30,000 and is priced at Rs. 11.9 lakh with the manual and Rs. 12.5 lakh with the automatic. For this additional price, it gets the following Internet-connected telematics features:

  • Connected Car Tech
  • Remote Vehicle Control Through Smartphone
  • Live Vehicle Diagnosis
  • Vehicle Live Location & Geo-Fencing

We don’t find the variant lucratively priced. But if you prefer these features and find the Rs. 30,000 price acceptable, then you can consider this.

Which Variant Of The 2020 Tata Nexon Facelift Diesel Offers The Most Value For Money?

If you don’t mind the Rs. 1.5 lakh price jump for the diesel engine, then the base, XE variant of the 2020 Nexon facelift is a great value for money considering the following 2 things:

  • it doesnt look like a base variant
    • projector headlamps
    • LED tail lamps
    • LED DRLs
  • It gets most of the safety features of the top variants and has 5-star Global NCAP rating
    • HSA
    • ESC
    • Traction control
    • ABS
    • Parking sensors
    • 2 airbags
    • ISOFIX

The only feature missing is a rear camera, which you can easily add later. It also gets 16-inch wheels with pretty wide 195-section tyres. More importantly, the XM and the XZ variants are overpriced for the features they offer. So, the XE variant is highly recommended for buyers on a budget or for those who are looking for a great value for money variant of the Nexon. Beware though, that you’ll have to find a compatible music system for this as it doesn’t have a standard slot for an aftermarket music player.

The XM and the XZ variants don’t justify the price gap considering the additional features they add. So, we’d suggest you either get the XE variant and accessorize according to your preference or consider upgrading to the XZ Plus variant.

The XZ Plus diesel has a better value for money rating than the XM and XZ and has a nice mix of functional and style features too. So, it’s worth buying. But if you want better value, then you should consider the XZ Plus (S). It gets all the features of the XZ Plus (O) minus the telematics. This is our top recommended variant of the 2020 Nexon diesel facelift.

Consider the jump to XZ Plus (O) only if you find the additional price for Internet-connected features acceptable. We don’t. So, we’ll leave this decision in your hands.

Up to Buyers to Decide

For buyers interested in the 2020 Nexon diesel with the automatic transmission, the XMA is worth considering as it not only gets most of the must-have features, it’s also under Rs. 10 lakh. So, lower taxes in most states. The on-road price jump to the XZA Plus diesel is quite high.

The XZA Plus (S) is our top recommended variant and the most value for money option too. We leave the decision to upgrade to the XZA Plus (O) in your hands. The only additional feature it has over the XZA (S) is telematics and Internet connectivity.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The 2020 Tata Nexon Facelift Diesel?

The Nexon has a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is a standard displacement for a small diesel SUV. its power output of 110PS is second only to the XUV300’s and so is the torque of 260Nm. The car with the best torque-to-weight ratio in this segment is the XUV300 followed by the Venue and then the Nexon. The Honda WR-V and Ford EcoSport’s torque-to-weight ratio is unimpressive and far worse than the other diesel SUVs’. The Nexon’s fuel efficiency of 22.44kmpl is also satisfactory.

The Nexon diesel stands out with its diesel engine and automatic transmission combination. The XUV300 is the only other car with this option. Other than that, everything else is business as usual - great but not ground-breaking like the XUV300.

The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezz, which only offered a diesel engine, is now the only car in this segment without a diesel engine.

What Are The Dimensions Of The 2020 Tata Nexon Facelift?

The Nexon is big and it shows. It has great road presence thanks to its wide and tall body. It also has a pretty big 350-litre boot space but what takes the cake is its ground clearance of 209mm. If you have to frequently drive on bad roads, then the Nexon is the best option for you. Nothing else comes even close.
