It also gets a 1.0L 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine as well, that makes 76PS of maximum power and 95Nm of peak torque. This engine is available with a 5-speed manual transmission and has a fuel efficiency of 17.75kmpl.

Ford Aspire gets a 1.2L petrol 3-cylinder engine which makes 96PS of maximum power and 119Nm of peak torque. It is available with a 5-speed manual transmission and has a mileage of 18.5kmpl.

    Petrol Manual Engine Review

    • The Polo Turbo is more powerful than the Aspire but the non-turbo model has only 76PS of power.
    • The Polo's turbo engine produces a lot more torque than the Aspire's. But the non-turbo has a double-digit torque output.
    • Even the Santro and Triber have better torque output than the Polo non-turbo. Only small hatchbacks like Alto, Kwid, Redi Go, WagonR 1.0, etc make less torque than the Polo 1.0 NA engine.
    • It is also worth noting that the torque-to-weight ratio of Polo non turbo is worse than even the Kwid 0.8 and Datsun Redi-GO 0.8. So, expect lousy performance from this engine, which is not expected from a car of this class.
    • The Polo turbo, on the other hand, blows everything away with best-in-class performance and a torque-to-weight ratio comparable with Jeep Compass petrol turbo and Honda WR-V turbo diesel.
    • Both engines of the Polo have lower mileage than the Aspire. The non-turbo engine stands out like a sore thumb on the Polo spec sheet as it not only has poor performance, but it also has a poor fuel efficiency figure of just 17.75kmpl.

The Polo's engine offers more torque, so it will offer better driveability compared to the Aspire's engine.

Is the Volkswagen Polo better than the Ford Aspire?

Price of the base variant of Volkswagen Polo is Rs. 5.83 lakh and Ford Aspire is Rs. 6.09 lakh (both ex-showroom). The usable variant of the Polo with a turbo engine costs a lot more than the Aspire’s Titanium Plus petrol.

In terms of dimensions, the Aspire is a considerably larger car than the Polo. So it will have a better road presence than the Polo.

For petrol manual powertrain, Polo's turbo petrol engine offers more torque, so it is expected to offer better driveability compared to Aspire's engine. But, the non-turbo engine has a sorry torque-to-weight ratio, which is lower than even the most affordable car in India - Redi-Go 0.8. Expect barely adequate performance from this engine. On top of that, expect poor mileage from the Polo non-turbo as well.

The Polo turbo and the Aspire have satisfactory fuel efficiency considering their significantly better performance.

In terms of features, the two cars seem on par for the most part. The Polo gets a front armrest, larger alloy wheels, and smartphone connectivity while the Aspire offers 4 more airbags and a rear parking camera.
