If you are on a strict budget and value safety above everything else, here’s a list of the safest cars under Rs. 6.0 lakh in India that you can buy currently. The cars on this list were selected based on their Global NCAP rating. However, it is important to note that GNCAP updated their testing protocol in July 2022. Earlier, the cars tested under GNCAP’s Safer Cars For India program were rated based on their frontal impact tests only. However, post June 2022, cars are now rated based on both front and side impacts, in addition to active safety features.

All cars in this list were tested based on GNCAP’s OLD test protocol. Hence, their scores could change when BNCAP tests them with the new protocol. Global NCAP are wrapping up the Safer Cars For India program by the end of 2023.

1. Tata Punch

The Tata Punch sits at the top of the list of safest cars under Rs. 6.0 lakh in India with a score of 16.44 out of 17 for adult safety and 40.89 out of 49 for child safety. Tallied up, the final star rating of the Punch stands at 5 stars for the adult and 4 for child safety.

Tata currently offer the Punch with a petrol-manual, petrol-automatic and CNG-manual powertrain options. The Tata Punch is available in 15 variants. However, only 1 petrol-manual variant makes it to this list with an ex-showroom price tag of Rs. 6.0 lakh (ex-showroom).

2. Tata Tiago

The Tata Tiago is the 2nd in this list with an adult safety score of 12.52 out of 17 and a child safety score of 34.15 out of 49. The final star rating for this car stands at 4 for adults and 3 for child safety. The Tata Tiago is available with a petrol-manual, petrol-automatic, CNG-manual and electric-automatic powertrain options. However, only 2 petrol-manual variants cost under Rs. 6.0 lakh (ex-showroom).

3. Nissan Magnite

The Nissan Magnite, which shares its platform and powertrain with the Kiger, scored an adult safety rating of 11.85 for adult and 24.88 for child safety. The star rating of the Magnite remains identical to that of the Kiger with 4 stars for adult and 2 for child safety. However, only the base XE variant of the Magnite costs under Rs. 6.0 lakh (ex-showroom).

Meanwhile, in October 2023, Hyundai announced it would offer 6 airbags as standard across all its models. Hence, Hyundai’s cars priced at or under Rs. 6.0 lakh, such as the Grand i10 Nios and Exter, have become safer than before. However, neither the Exter nor the updated Grand i10 Nios will go through the Safer Cars For India program, and that’s the reason why we can’t add them to this list yet. That said, Hyundai have announced they are sending 3 cars for the Bharat NCAP tests, so stay tuned to this page to see if the Grand i10 Nios and Exter make it to the list.
