If you are on a strict budget and value safety above everything else, here’s a list of the safest cars under Rs. 10.0 lakh in India that you can buy currently. The cars on this list were selected based on their Global NCAP rating. However, it is important to note that GNCAP updated their testing protocol in July 2022. Earlier, the cars tested under GNCAP’s Safer Cars For India program were rated based on their frontal impact tests only. However, cars tested post June 2022 were rated based on both front and side impacts, in addition to active safety features.

Safest Cars Under Rs. 10 Lakh

1. Tata Punch

The Tata Punch leads the pack as the safest car under Rs. 8.0 lakh in India, boasting an impressive safety rating of 16.44 out of 17 for adult safety and 40.89 out of 49 for child safety. When combined, the Punch achieves a remarkable final GNCAP star rating of 5 stars for adult safety and 4 stars for child safety.

Currently, Tata offers the Punch with multiple powertrain options including petrol-manual, petrol-automatic, and CNG-manual. With a lineup comprising 15 variants, 14 variants of the Tata Punch fall under the Rs. 10.0 lakh price range (ex-showroom), the exception being the top-spec Punch Creative Flagship Dual Tone petrol-automatic variant.

2. Mahindra XUV300

The Mahindra XUV300 is right up the alley with only 0.02 points behind the Tata Punch in adult safety score. However, the child safety score is a fair bit behind as it got 37.44 points out of 49. Overall, the star rating is identical to the Tata Punch as it got 5 stars in adult safety and 4 in child safety.

It has 5 powertrain options but only the lower 2 turbo petrol-manual variants cost less than Rs. 10.0 lakh (ex-showroom).

3. Tata Altroz

The Tata Altroz secured a strong safety standing with a score of 16.13 out of 17 points in adult safety, resulting in an impressive 5-star rating. With a child safety score of 29 out of 49, the Tata Altroz received a  3-star rating for child safety.

Presently, Tata offers the Altroz with a variety of powertrain options, including petrol-manual, petrol-automatic, turbo petrol-manual, diesel-manual and CNG-manual. Among these variants, only the top 2 diesel-manual, top 2 petrol-automatic and the top-spec CNG-manual variant of the Altroz do not make it to the list as their prices fall above the Rs. 10.0 lakh price bracket.

4. Tata Tiago

The Tata Tiago secured the 3rd spot on this list, boasting an adult safety score of 12.52 out of 17 and a child safety score of 34.15 out of 49. The overall star rating for this model stands at 4 for adult safety and 3 for child safety.

Tata offers the Tiago with a diverse range of powertrain options, including petrol-manual, petrol-automatic, CNG-manual, and electric. All variants of the Tata Tiago qualify for this list.

Similar to the Tiago, the Tata Tigor boasts matching safety scores of 12.52 out of 17 for adult safety and 34.15 out of 49 for child safety. Simplifying the ratings, GNCAP granted it 4 stars for adult safety and 3 stars for child safety.

The Tata Tigor shares its powertrain options with the Tiago hatchback, offering similar choices like petrol-manual, petrol-automatic, CNG-manual, and electric-automatic. All variants of the Tata Tigor make it to the list.

6. Renault Triber

The Renault Triber stands out as the largest vehicle among these models, offering seating for up to 7 passengers. Its Global NCAP test resulted in 11.62 points for adult safety and 27 points for child safety out of 17 and 49 points, respectively. This translates to a safety rating of 4 stars for adult safety and 2 stars for child safety.

For the Triber, all variants qualify for this list.

7. Renault Kiger

The Renault Kiger underwent GNCAP crash tests and achieved a score of 12.34 out of 17 for adult safety and 21.05 out of 49 for child safety. Consequently, it earned a final rating of 4 stars for adult safety and 2 stars for child safety.

All normal petrol-manual and normal petrol-automatic variants make it to the list. However, only the base turbo petrol-manual variant meets our criteria with an ex-showroom price of Rs. 10.0 lakh. The turbo petrol-automatic, variants do not qualify for this list.

8. Nissan Magnite

Following closely behind the Kiger is its counterpart, the Nissan Magnite. Despite sharing the same platform and powertrain as the Kiger, the Magnite surprisingly obtained a slightly lower safety rating with 11.85 for adult safety and 24.88 for child safety. However, the star rating for the Magnite remains consistent with that of the Kiger, achieving 4 stars for adult safety and 2 stars for child safety. All normal petrol-manual, normal petrol-automatic, turbo petrol-manual variants make it to the list and only 1 out of 5 turbo petrol-automatic variants of the Magnite qualifies for this list.

Honourable Mention - 2023 Tata Nexon

Nexon

The Tata Nexon started the safety revolution in India over half a decade ago. While the Tata Nexon received an extensive update in September 2023, Tata are yet to send the B2-segment SUV for Bharat NCAP crash tests. However, the pre-facelift Tata Nexon was one of the safest rated cars in India with an adult safety score of 16.06 points out of 17 and and child safety score of 25 points out of 49 in the GNCAP crash test. The pre-facelift Nexon had a 5- and 3-star rating in adult and child safety, respectively. The updated model is likely to improve upon the older scores in the upcoming Bharat NCAP tests thanks to the addition of standard safety features such as 3-point seatbelts for all 5 passengers and 6 airbags. Meanwhile, in October 2023, Hyundai made a significant announcement of equipping all its models with 6 airbags as a standard safety feature. As a result, Hyundai's vehicles priced at or below Rs. 6 lakh, such as the Grand i10 Nios and Exter, have notably enhanced their safety standards. However, neither the Exter nor the updated Grand i10 Nios are currently part of the Safer Cars For India program, which is why they're not included in this list as yet. Nevertheless, Hyundai has revealed plans to subject three of its cars to the Bharat NCAP tests.
