Top 5 Safest Cars Under Rs. 7 Lakh

For a safety-conscious buyer like yourself, even with a budget of Rs. 7.0 lakh (ex-showroom), you can get yourself a pretty well-loaded car with a 3-5-star safety rating. Here are all the variants that will fit your budget.

Note: The adult safety score is out of 17 while the child safety score is out of 49. GNCAP then condenses the score into a star rating for easy understanding. For the sake of consistency, this list only includes made-in-India cars tested by Global NCAP.

1. Tata Altroz

Tata Altroz

We start off with the only 5-star rated car you can buy for under Rs. 7.0 lakh. The Tata Altroz from Tata got a clean 5-star adult safety rating with a score of 16.3 out of 17. Its child rating stands at 3 stars with a score of 29 out of 49.

For under 7 lakh, you can get pick either of the lower 3 variants with a normal petrol engine or the base variant with the turbo diesel engine. The base XE petrol trim especially carries an aggressive price tag but is too barren. If you are fine with adding some aftermarket accessories, then you can get yourself the safest car India has to offer for under Rs. 6.0 lakh.

VW Polo

The Polo you can buy at a Volkswagen showroom today first went on sale in India about a decade ago. It still doesn’t look old, though. And it still retains its safety score of 12.54 for adults and 29.91 for children from 2014. Its combined safety rating for adult and child occupants stands at 4 stars and 3 stars, respectively.

The 1.0-litre normal petrol engine, however, has a poor torque-to-weight ratio and poor drivability. Unfortunately, even the Comfortline variant, which breaches the Rs. 7.0 lakh limit even with the normal petrol engine. We strongly recommend you to stretch for the Comfortline turbo if you can. That engine offers far better performance, drivability and real-world efficiency than the normal petrol engine. The base petrol engine is only somewhat usable for everyday city driving.
