What Are The Pros And Cons Of Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Petrol?

The pros or advantages of Grand i10 Nios petrol 2020 are:

  • 3 engine-transmission combinations to choose from - 1.2L MT, 1.2L AMT and 1.0L turbo MT
  • Good fuel efficiency of 20kmpl regardless of which combo you pick
  • Most variants are VFM and justify their incremental price
  • Phenomenal performance and driveability from the turbo petrol engine (torque-to-weight ratio of 175Nm/tonne is the best for any petrol car under Rs. 10 lakh)

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios petrol 2020 has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • The turbo petrol engine is overpriced and carries a hefty premium for the performance
  • No cruise control or ACMT for the expressway-worthy turbo petrol engine
  • Hyundai’s wide service network
  • Bland rear styling doesn’t match the front; looks a lot like the cheaper Tiago
  • The Datsun Go offers the upmarket CVT-type automatic transmission for a lower price than the Nios AMT; the Go also has an SUV-like 180mm ground clearance

What Is The Price Of 2020 Hyundai Grand i10 Nios?

The Grand i10 Nios is available in 4 variants - EraMagnaSportz and Asta. The 1.2L petrol engine with a manual transmission is available in all 4 while the automatic is available in only the top 3. The Nios petrol manual costs between Rs. 5.08 and 7.21 lakh (ex-showroom). With the automatic transmission, the prices are between Rs. 6.45 and 7.7 lakh.

There’s also a 1.0L turbo petrol engine option with extra horsepower and a lot more torque. This engine is only available in the Sportz variant for an additional Rs. 95,000 or so over the Sportz DT trim and costs Rs. 7.70 lakh.

Based on the Nios Magna, Hyundai also offers a Corporate Edition variant for about Rs. 20,000 more.

If you’re constrained by budget and want the Grand i10 Nios, only then, the Era variant is worth considering. If you can stretch your budget, then the Magna is worth buying as it adds enough features to justify its price. Moreover, most of these features are must-have and also difficult to install after purchase.

Most of these features are must-have for a car in this price range. This variant also focuses mostly on functional features, which you’ll appreciate during the ownership. The Nios Magna justifies the premium over the Era variant and is the lowest variant we’d recommend for a decent ownership experience. Let’s see if the Corporate Edition is any good.

Petrol Manual: Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Magna vs Corporate Edition Variant

The price difference between the Grand i10 Nios Magna and Corporate Edition variant is almost Rs. 19,000 and costs Rs. 6.11 lakh with the manual transmission (ex-showroom).

The notable features of the Nios Corporate Edition are:

  • 75-inch touchscreen
  • Power folding mirrors
  • Stylish Wheel Covers
  • Larger 15-inch Steel Wheels
  • Navigation
  • Anti-bacterial and Anti-fungal upholstery
  • Air purifier

If you’re considering the Magna variant, then the Corporate Edition is worth upgrading as it justifies the Rs. 20k price jump over the Magna. The inclusion of a touchscreen also makes it easier to add a parking camera as the display is included. The only major miss in our opinion is native smartphone connectivity as it doesn’t get Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Strictly from a value perspective, the Nios Corporate is a better value for money option than the Magna but most of its features fall in the good-to-have category. So, upgrade to Corporate only if you want these features in your car.

Petrol Manual: Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Corporate vs Sportz Variant

The price difference between the Grand i10 Nios Corporate and Sportz variant is about Rs. 34,000 for the manual transmission. The Nios Sportz petrol manual costs Rs. 6.45 lakh (ex-showroom). The Nios Sportz adds the following additional features to the mix:

  • Projector Fog Lamps
  • Larger 8-inch Touchscreen Infotainment System
  • Digital Speedometer Integrated In 5.3-inch MID
  • Rear Parking Camera
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Roof Rails
  • Turn Indicators On ORVMs
  • Defogger
  • Smaller 14-inch Tyres With Alloy Wheels
  • Auto AC
  • Shark Fin Antenna

It’s worth noting that the Nios Sportz also loses the following features, which are otherwise available in the Corporate Edition:

  • (-) Larger 15-inch Steel Wheels
  • (-) Air purifier
  • (-) Antibacterial upholstery

Despite these deletions, the Sportz variant more than justifies its incremental cost over any of the lower variants of the Grand i10 Nios petrol manual.

Petrol Manual: Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz vs Sportz Dual-Tone Variant

The price difference between the Grand i10 Nios Sportz and Sportz dual-tone variant is Rs. 30,000 and costs Rs. 6.75 lakh (ex-showroom). This variant adds the following features to the mix:

  • Projector Headlamps
  • 15-inch Machined Alloy Wheels
  • Wireless Phone Charger
  • Black Interior w/ Coloured Inserts
  • Leather-wrapped Steering
  • Black Roof

The Sportz dual-tone variant of the Grand i10 Nios also justifies its additional asking price over the vanilla Sportz variant. If you like these features, then the Sportz dual-tone gets our ‘buy’ recommendation.

Petrol Manual: Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz Dual Tone vs Turbo Variant

The price difference between the Grand i10 Nios Sportz dual-tone and Sportz turbo variant is Rs. 95,000 if you go with the solid exterior colour. For an additional Rs 5,000, you can get the Nios turbo with a dual-tone colour option. The Nios turbo costs Rs. 7.7 lakh with body-coloured roof and Rs. 7.75 lakh (ex-showroom) with black roof.

The Nios turbo makes 100PS of power and 172Nm of torque at very low, city-friendly RPMs, thus greatly helping with drivability as well as performance. The Nios turbo also justifies about Rs. 40,000 more for the added performance. Otherwise, it doesn’t add any new feature over and above the Sportz dual-tone. So, the Nios turbo is overpriced in that sense. But its torque-to-weight ratio of 175Nm/tonne is the best for any petrol car under Rs. 10 lakh. When you look at it from this angle, it starts to look a lot more impressive.

However, considering its expressway-worthy engine and high price premium over the Sportz dual-tone 1.2L, it should have had cruise control. To highlight its city-friendly performance and drivability, Hyundai should’ve also added the ACMT (auto-clutch manual transmission) to its feature list. With these, this would’ve been an easy recommendation even to buyers otherwise not looking for better performance. As is, the Nios turbo is not recommended as its performance and features don’t justify the incremental cost over the Sportz dual-tone.

Petrol Manual: Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz Dual-Tone vs Asta Variant

The price difference between the Grand i10 Nios Sportz dual-tone and Asta variant is Rs. 46,000 and it costs Rs. 7.21 lakh (ex-showroom). The Asta variant gets the following additional features over the Sportz dual-tone:

  • Keyless Entry w/ Push-button Start/Stop
  • Chrome Finish Parking Lever Tip
  • Cooled Glovebox
  • Rear Chrome Garnish
  • Adjustable Rear Headrests
  • Chrome Door Handles
  • Luggage Lamp
  • Rear Wiper & Washer

The Asta variant doesn’t justify spending this sum over the Sportz dual-tone. The Asta petrol manual is expensive and not recommended.

Petrol AMT Automatic: Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Magna Base Automatic Variant

The Grand i10 Nios Magna is the most affordable variant with petrol AMT automatic and it costs Rs. 6.45. The Nios Magna AMT is about Rs. 53,000 more expensive than the Magna manual. It gets the following features as standard:

  • Dual Front Airbags
  • Manual AC w/ Rear AC Vents
  • ABS
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • All Power Windows w/ Driver-side Auto Down
  • Front & Rear Power Outlet
  • Remote Central Locking

Petrol AMT Automatic: Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Magna vs Corporate Edition Variant

The price difference between the Grand i10 Nios Magna AMT and Corporate Edition AMT variant is about Rs. 19,000. The Nios Corporate petrol automatic costs Rs.. 6.64 lakh (ex-showroom).

The notable features of the Nios Corporate Edition are:

  • 75-inch touchscreen
  • Power folding mirrors
  • Stylish Wheel Covers
  • Larger 15-inch Steel Wheels
  • Navigation
  • Anti-bacterial and Anti-fungal upholstery
  • Air purifier

If you’re considering the Magna variant, then the Corporate Edition is worth upgrading as it justifies the Rs. 20k price jump over the Magna. But, most of these features are good-to-have and you should make this jump if you anyways wanted these features. Now, let’s see if the Sportz AMT offers just as good value for money as the Sportz MT.

Petrol AMT Automatic: Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Corporate Edition vs Sportz Variant

The price difference between the Grand i10 Nios Corporate Edition and Sportz AMT variants is Rs. 42,000 and the Sportz AMT costs Rs. 7.05 lakh (ex-showroom). The additional features of the Sportz AMT are:

  • Projector Fog Lamps
  • Larger 8-inch Touchscreen Infotainment System
  • Digital Speedometer Integrated In 5.3-inch MID
  • Rear Parking Camera
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Roof Rails
  • Turn Indicators On ORVMs
  • Defogger
  • Smaller 14-inch Tyres With Alloy Wheels
  • Auto AC
  • Projector headlamps
  • Shark Fin Antenna

At the same time, the Sportz trim also loses the following features:

  • (-) Larger 15-inch Steel Wheels
  • (-) Air purifier
  • (-) Antibacterial upholstery

Despite these deductions, the Nios Sportz AMT seems to offer a solid value for money compared to the lower AMT variants. This is our top-recommended variant of the Nios petrol with the AMT automatic.

  • Chrome Door Handles
  • Cooled Glovebox
  • Rear Chrome Garnish

Which Variant Of The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Petrol MT Should You Buy?

The Era variant of the Grand i10 Nios has a fairly basic feature set. So, we’d recommend at least the Magna variant for a decent ow-nership experience. It not only justifies the price jump but also covers the must-have part of the feature list very well. The Corporate Edition is also worth considering if you like some of its features. Just like the Magna, it’s priced well too.

If you want even better value for money, then look no further than the Sportz and Sportz dual-tone variants. Both of them offer fantastic value and some good-to-have features. However, only a handful of its features fall in the must-have category and most of them are style-oriented. So, if you value functionality more than style, then you’ll be better off with the Manga. The Asta and turbo are both overpriced for what they bring to the table and not recommended.

The turbo would’ve felt more complete with the cruise control and ACMT (auto-clutch) transmission for the same asking price to highlight its city- and highway-worthy engine characteristics. Then, it’d have been our top-recommended variant for the Nios.

Which Variant Of The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Petrol AMT Automatic Should You Buy?

For Nios petrol automatic buyers, the Magna again meets the needs just fine and is worth buying. The Corporate Edition is also a great value for money option and worth considering if you value the added features of this variant. But for an extra dose of flair, you should consider the Sportz AMT, which is also a better value for money than the Magna. The Asta is not recommended as it doesn’t justify its incremental asking price over the Sportz variant.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Petrol?

The Grand i10 Nios’ 1.2L petrol engine packs a healthy performance and mileage figure with manual as well as AMT automatic. But the turbo blows everything else out of the water with its 172Nm of peak torque arriving rather early at just 1500rpm. This engine can make quick work of closing gaps in traffic and munch miles at expressway speeds all day long without feeling strained. And it does all that without compromising on the mileage part.

However, the two things that hurt Nios’ mechanical prowess are the lack of clutchless automatic with the Nios turbo and AMT automatic. The Nios turbo with the ACMT would’ve been the perfect tool for city + highway use as it could competently handle both the environments very well. The AMT is not a serious flaw for the Nios as most cars in this segment come with the cheaper AMT automatic. But the Datsun Go offers the smoother CVT automatic for the price of an AMT and that value proposition is hard to ignore for buyers seeking mechanical refinement.
