August Update: 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Variants Explained - Which One To Buy?

by Mahesh Yadav on Sunday, Aug 02 2020

Read on to find out which variant of the 2020 Tata Altroz petrol is the most value for money. Here we compare the prices of the 2020 Altroz's petrol variants and the features to tell you which variant is the most Value For Money (VFM). Then we will compare the engine specs, dimensions and fuel efficiency of the 2020 Tata Altroz with its competitors and other petrol B2-segment hatchbacks.

    2020 Tata Altroz

Tata has added a new XM Style + Rhythm variant and added auto AC to the XT variant. Let’s see how the variants compare after these updates to find out which one offers the best value for money.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Tata Altroz Petrol?

The pros or advantages of Altroz petrol 2020 are:

    • Most feature-rich car in the segment. It offers everything you expect from a car in this segment and then some.
    • Along with fresh styling, its large dimensions lend it great road presence.
    • Adequate performance and satisfactory fuel efficiency rating from the petrol engine performance (torque-to-weight ratio and mileage are both better than Hyundai i20).
    • Base and top variants offer tremendous value for money.
    • The only car in the segment with 5-star Global NCAP safety rating. Also, the most affordable car with a 5-star safety rating.

The Tata Altroz petrol 2020 has the following shortcomings or problems:

    • Feature packs like Luxe, Rhythm, Style, could’ve been offered as accessories so that you don’t have to pay the registration fee on top of that cost. Currently, these are part of the ex-showroom price.
    • Stripped down base XE variant and expensive, non-VFM XM variant (including XM + feature packs). You have to spend a good chunk for a decent value and ownership experience.
    • No automatic transmission option.
    • No turbo petrol engine option (Polo offers it while the i20 will get it with the next generation model).
    • Skinny 165-section tyres on lower variants

If you prefer watching instead of reading, then here’s our August 2020 update video of the Tata Altroz variant breakdown:

What Is The Price Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol?

The Tata Altroz petrol is available mainly in 4 variants - XE, XM, XT and XZ. On top of these, there are some additional options available with all four variants. These are XE Rhythm, XM Rhythm, XM Style, XM Style + Rhythm, XT Luxe, XZ (O) and XZ Urban. Put these all together, and you have a total of 11 variants to choose from.

Prices of the Altroz petrol start at Rs. 5.44 lakh with the XE and go up to Rs. 7.89 lakh for the XZ Urban variant. The diesel variants cost about Rs. 1.6 lakh more than the petrol counterparts.

Is The XE Variant Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Worth Buying?

The Altroz petrol has an aggressive starting price of Rs. 5.44 lakh but most of the features are reserved for the top two variants. So, the most important thing you get the XE variant is a 5-star Global NCAP tested car. When you look at it this way, it’s still a great value for buyers who want the safest car for the lowest possible price. Here are the most notable features of the Altroz XE:

    • Std. Safety Features
    • 5 Star NCAP Rating
    • Multi-Drive Modes
    • Front Power Windows
    • Body Coloured Bumpers
    • Central Locking
    • Tilt Steering
    • Body Coloured Door Handles
    • Umbrella Holder
    • Integrated Rear Headrests
    • Black ORVMs
    • Steel Wheels w/ Hub Cap
    • Adjustable Front Headrests
    • MID
    • Flat-bottom Steering

This variant is a phenomenal value for money but it’s too basic to recommend. As is, the XE is not worth buying for most buyers even though it’s a great value for money. A premium car buyer doesn’t just want a safe car. You’d also want some creature comforts to go with your new car. So, it’s hard to recommend. More so, because the base variant doesn’t get a music system and there’s no standard slot for an aftermarket music system. Since this car is new, you’ll also have trouble finding a suitable music system for this variant.

Keeping that in mind, Tata also has the XE with Rhythm pack, which adds a music system and a few extra features. Let’s see if that one is worth buying.

Is The XE Rhythm Variant Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Worth Buying?

The XE Rhythm variant of the Altroz petrol costs Rs. 5.7 lakh, which is Rs. 26,000 more than the standard XE. It adds the following notable features:

    • Music system
    • 4 speakers
    • Remote central locking
    • Extra horn

Although this variant barely justifies spending another Rs. 25,000, it’s not recommended for most buyers. If you can’t stretch your budget any further, then the XE Rhythm is the variant we’d recommend buying.

Is The XM Variant Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Worth Buying?

The Altroz XM petrol costs Rs. 6.3 lakh - Rs. 60,000 more than XE Rhythm. For the additional cost, you get:

    • Rear power windows
    • Power adjustable and foldable mirrors
    • Rear parcel tray

The XM variant doesn’t get the following benefits, which are available in XE Rhythm:

    • 2 rear speakers
    • Remote central locking
    • Extra horn

While the included ones are must-have features, the asking price is clearly too high. So, we can’t recommend buying the Altroz XM. Instead, consider sticking with the XE Rhythm or get one of the higher variants.

Is The XM Style Variant Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Worth Buying?

The XM Style is Rs. 34,000 more than the XM and costs Rs. 6.64 lakh. The notable additional features over the XM variant are:

    • 16-inch wheels with covers
    • Wider tyres
    • Black roof
    • Front and rear fog lamps
    • LED DRLs

Again, the XM Style is a decent upgrade over the XM but the price gap XM created is difficult to ignore. The XM Style is not worth buying.

Is The XM Rhythm Variant Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Worth Buying?

The XM Rhythm adds Rs. 39,000 to the cost and is priced at Rs. 6.54 lakh. The additional features of the XM Rhythm are:

    • 7-inch Touchscreen
    • Rear Camera
    • 2 Tweeters
    • Rear Speakers
    • Remote Central Locking
    • Extra Horn

The asking price over the XM variant for these additional features is justifiable but the XM itself is quite overpriced. So, the XM Rhythm petrol is also not worth buying.

Is The XM Rhythm + Style Variant Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Worth Buying?

The Altroz’ XM Rhythm + Style is exactly what the name suggests. It gets all the features of the Style pack and Rhythm pack with the XM variant but the price is Rs. 10,000 lower than what you’d pay if you bought them separately. This one was not available earlier.

The XM Rhythm + Style costs Rs. 64,000 more than XM and is priced at Rs. 6.94 lakh. It gets the following additional features over the XM variant:

    • 16-inch wheels with covers
    • Wider tyres
    • Black roof
    • Front and rear fog lamps
    • LED DRLs
    • 7-inch Touchscreen
    • Rear Camera
    • 2 Tweeters
    • Rear Speakers
    • Remote Central Locking
    • Extra Horn

Combining the two special features packs and saving Rs. 10k in the process sounds sweet. But not sweet enough to wash out the sour taste left by the already overpriced XM variant. The XM variant is not worth buying, with or without any feature packs. Instead, consider spending another Rs. 5,000 and get the XT variant. Let’s see what that one offers.

Is The XT Variant Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Worth Buying?

The Altroz XT costs Rs. 5,000 more than the XM Style + Rhythm and is priced at Rs. 6.99 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi). It gets the following additional features:

    • Cornering lamps
    • Cruise control
    • day/night inside mirror
    • Auto AC (new features for XT)
    • Keyless entry with push-button start/stop
    • Cooled glovebox
    • Footwell ambient lighting
    • Steering-mounted controls

You don’t even need to do the math for this one. A quick glance will tell you that this variant is offering better value for money than the XM with either of its feature packs does. The XT variant is highly recommended and worth buying. The only reason to skip this one is if you want even better value and more features. Then you need to look at the XZ trim.

Is The XT Luxe Variant Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Worth Buying?

The Altroz XT petrol with the Luxe pack costs Rs. 7.38 lakh, which is Rs. 39,000 more than the XT. It gets the following additional features over the standard XT variant:

    • Height-adjustable Driver Seat
    • Rear Seat Armrest
    • Rear Fog Lamps
    • Black Roof
    • Body Coloured ORVMs
    • Different Wheel Cover Design

The only important and functional features in this list are rear armrest and height-adjustable driver seat. If you want these, then you should instead consider spending Rs. 21,000 more and getting the Altroz XZ instead. As it stands, the XT Luxe doesn’t justify its price and is not worth buying.

    • Rear defogger
    • Rear AC vents
    • Auto headlamps with projector
    • Rear washer and wiper
    • Adjustable rear headrests
    • Auto wipers
    • Sliding front armrest
    • Wearable key
    • 16-inch alloy wheels wheels
    • Ambient lighting on dashboard

The XZ variant covers more than justifies the price jump with its features even from the XE variant. The XZ petrol is the most value for money variant of the Altroz and is worth buying.

Is The XZ (O) Variant Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Worth Buying?

The XZ (O) is a cosmetic upgrade over the XZ variant. For an extra Rs. 16,000, it gets only a black roof, which is a reasonable asking price. Everything else is the same.

Is The XZ Urban Variant Of 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Worth Buying?

The XZ Urban costs Rs. 7.89 lakh. For an extra Rs. 14,000 over the XZ (O), the Urban pack adds body-coloured outside mirrors and body-coloured cabin accents. In this case, again, the asking price is somewhat reasonable. Since these are cosmetic upgrades, we leave the decision in your hands. As per our data, the XZ Urban and XZ (O) are both reasonably but not attractively priced.

Which Variant Of The 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Offers The Most Value For Money?

The Tata Altroz XZ petrol is the best value for money variant and our top recommended option in the entire lineup of 11 variants.

The base XE variant is too basic and not worth buying. If you want the safest car you can get for the lowest cost possible, then consider stretching for the XE Rhythm pack, which isn’t priced too bad.

The XM variant is too expensive. The additional feature packs like Rhythm and Style don’t do enough to justify buying the XM variant either. The XT is the variant we’d happily recommend if you want to buy the Altroz petrol. But, if you can stretch your budget, then the XZ is totally worth buying. To further enhance the style of the car, you can go with the XZ Urban, which is reasonably priced.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The 2020 Tata Altroz Petrol?

The 2020 Altroz petrol uses the same 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine from the Tiago and Tigor. Except for the Polo 1.0 non-turbo, the other cars in this segment offer the refinement of a 4-cylinder engine or better power and torque. The saving grace for the Altroz petrol is its peak torque of 113Nm, which peaks at 3300rpm, about 700-1000rpm sooner than others. The torque-to-weight ratio of the Altroz petrol is also acceptable at 109Nm/tonne, which is still at least 3Nm/tonne better than the i20’s. Similarly, the Altroz’ fuel efficiency of almost 20kmpl is better than the Hyundai Elite i20, Figo and Polo non-turbo.

The 2020 Tata Altroz’ petrol engine comes across as fine but not impressive. It’s only when you compare it with the Polo turbo that you notice how far behind is its performance. And the Baleno/Glanza hybrid show how fuel-efficient a car from this segment can be.

We’re hearing rumours that the Altroz will get the 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine from the Nexon and it’ll also get a dual-clutch automatic transmission. That should sprinkle some excitement on the mechanical side of the car, which has otherwise nailed the styling and features departments really well.

What Are The Dimensions Of The 2020 Tata Altroz?

The Altroz certainly has the road presence to match its styling too. It’s the widest car in the B2 hatchback segment followed closely by the Baleno/Glanza. It’s also a bit taller than these two cars and almost tall enough to challenge the Figo. That makes it the biggest car in this segment, even if only by a tiny margin.

The Altroz also has a bigger boot than its rivals. Only the Jazz has a bigger boot, but it’s not on sale as of August 1, 2020. The Tata Altroz’ ground clearance is nothing special and at 165mm, it’s on the low side but still acceptable. Similarly, the fuel tank capacity of 37-litres is quite small compared to its rivals but this shouldn’t worry most buyers.

What’s not acceptable is the size of the tyres for the lower variants, which get 165-section tyres around 14-inch wheels. These days, even the base variant of the most affordable car in India - Datsun Redi-Go - gets 165-section tyres with 14-inch wheels. This is inexcusable for the Altroz. The Baleno and Glanza are the only cars that offer a minimum of 15-inch even on their base trims. An upgrade to at least 175-section tyres is a must to improve its handling and braking characteristics and lend it better stance. Or, you could just go with our recommendation and get the XT or XZ variants with wider tyres and bigger wheels.
