by Mahesh Yadav on Wednesday, Sep 09 2020

In this variants explained article, you'll find out which variant of the 2020 Jeep Compass diesel you should buy based on the variant prices, features and value for money. Here we compare and objectively analyse the 2020 Compass' diesel variants and the features. Then we will compare the engine specs, dimensions and mileage of the 2020 Jeep Compass with its competitors and the other diesel-powered premium C-segment SUV, Hyundai Tucson.

    Jeep Compass

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Jeep Compass Diesel?

The pros or advantages of Compass diesel 2020 are:

    • Most affordable premium diesel-powered C-segment SUV in India.
    • Most affordable Jeep in India.
    • Offers a luxurious touch. Compass is the only car in this segment from a brand that doesn’t make budget hatchbacks and sedans but sells cars in the Rs. 1.0 crore price range.
    • The Sport Plus variant is well-equipped.

The Jeep Compass diesel 2020 has the following shortcomings or problems:

    • 178mm ground clearance looks horrible on a Jeep, which is synonymous with SUV.
    • No option of diesel + automatic transmission without the AWD system for buyers who just want the convenience of automatic and don't intend to go off-roading. This creates a big price difference between most Compass diesel MT and diesel AT variants.
    • Big price jumps between variants.

What Is The Price Of 2020 Jeep Compass Diesel?

The Jeep Compass diesel is available in 6 main variants - Sport Plus, Longitude, Longitude Plus, Limited Plus, Trailhawk and Trailhawk (O). The Sport Plus is the most affordable option and it’s only available with a 6-speed manual transmission for Rs. 17.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The off-road focussed top-spec Trailhawk variants are available with only an automatic transmission. The rest of the mid variants get a manual as well as automatic transmission option with all-wheel drive. Limited Plus is the only Compass diesel variant with the manual transmission and all-wheel drive. All automatic transmission variants come with all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

There’s also a Night Eagle limited edition variant based on the Longitude Plus variant and it costs Rs. 20.75 lakh (ex-showroom). This price is Rs. 45,000 more than the standard Longitude Plus.

The Compass diesel Sport Plus MT variant is about Rs. 1.5 lakh more expensive than the comparable petrol-powered Sport Plus trim. It’s difficult to gauge the price difference based on other variants as there’s no common mechanical ground to do so. The Compass is otherwise not available with petrol manual drivetrain and the automatics don’t have all-wheel drive. Here’s the Compass petrol price list for your reference.

2020 Jeep Compass Diesel Sport Plus - Base Model Features & Review

Sport Plus is the most affordable variant of the Jeep Compass diesel and it gets a decent number of features to offer satisfactory ownership experience. For an ex-showroom price of Rs. 18.0 lakh, it gets the following notable features:

    • 2 airbags
    • ABS
    • Rear parking sensors
    • ESC
    • Traction control
    • E parking brake
    • Rear washer and wiper
    • Rear defogger

    • Remote central locking
    • Tilt and telescopic steering

Considering the list of features, this is a good starting point. These features will suffice for most buyers for primarily city and occasional highway use. However, it lacks the wow factor we expect when we’re buying a car from a brand, which otherwise only makes super expensive, luxurious and lifestyle SUVs.

Some of the features you might miss are:

    • Keyless entry with push-button start/stop
    • Power folding mirrors
    • Projector headlamps
    • LED DRLs
    • Rear parking camera
    • Rear parcel shelf
    • Fog lamps
    • Sunroof

Value-wise, this is a good option and worth considering if you don’t want to spend any further for a Jeep and don’t mind the price difference between the petrol and diesel variants. Even for mileage, this is a good option as the automatic is only available with the AWD system, which will further increase the fuel consumption.

However, if you do more than an occasional highway trip, then a higher variant possibly with all-wheel drive and automatic transmission will serve you better. Let’s see which one f the higher variants offers better value.

2020 Jeep Compass Diesel Sport Plus vs Longitude Variant

The Longitude variant of the Compass diesel is available with a manual as well as a torque-converter-type automatic transmission. The Compass diesel Longitude costs Rs. 19.4 lakh (ex-showroom) with the manual and Rs. 21.96 lakh with the automatic and all-wheel drivetrain. The price difference between the Compass diesel Sport Plus and Longitude variants is Rs. 1.41 lakh. The price jump to the AT+ AWD setup will cost you another Rs. 2.56 lakh.

The asking price for the Longitude Plus variant over the Sport Plus is not justified with the features. This variant is absurdly overpriced and offers poor value for money. If you are on a tight budget and wanted the Compass diesel with all-wheel drive or automatic transmission, then Longitude is your most affordable option.

We strongly recommend not buying this variant with the manual transmission. Buy the Compass diesel automatic AWD only if you absolutely want it and you’re on a tight budget.

2020 Jeep Compass Diesel Longitude vs Longitude Plus Variant

The Longitude Plus variant of the Compass diesel costs Rs. 20.3 lakh with the manual and Rs. 22.86 lakh with the automatic and AWD. The price difference between the Compass diesel Longitude and Longitude Plus variants is Rs. 90,000. The price jump to the AT + AWD setup will cost you another Rs. 2.56 lakh.

2020 Jeep Compass Diesel Longitude Plus vs Night Eagle Variant

The price difference between the Compass diesel Longitude Plus and Night Eagle is Rs. 45,000. The Night Eagle is a special edition variant of the Compass and is based on the Longitude Plus variant only. It’s a cosmetic upgrade and offers the following features:

    • Larger, 18-inch black alloy wheels
    • Black badges
    • Black grille
    • Black interiors
    • Black roof
    • Night Eagle badging

The Night Eagle variant is available in all colours except silver. In our opinion, the features don't quite justify the asking price and it’s not recommended as the Longitude Plus variant itself is fairly overpriced.

2020 Jeep Compass Diesel Longitude Plus vs Limited Plus Variant

The Limited Plus variant of the Compass diesel costs Rs. 22.43 lakh with manual transmission and front-wheel drive. The Compass diesel AWD costs Rs. 24.21 lakh with the manual and Rs. 24.99 lakh with the automatic transmission (ex-showroom).

Because of big-ticket features like 4 extra airbags, 2-size larger alloy wheels, power driver seat and panoramic sunroof, the Limited Plus variant of the Compass diesel somewhat justifies its asking price over the lower variants. But it’s still expensive. If you want more features than the lower variants, then this variant is your best option as it offers better value for money than the mid variants. If you are strictly interested in getting the best bang for your buck, then you’re better off getting the most affordable Jeep diesel variants with manual or automatic transmission. That means Sport Plus for manual transmission and Longitude for automatic with all-wheel drive.

The Limited Plus variant with the diesel engine, manual transmission and all-wheel drive brings a unique combination to the table. It’s the only variant with manual transmission and all-wheel drive. If you value that mechanical feel of managing the vehicle yourself, then this variant is worth considering. The automatics take away a lot of control over the gear selections but offer better drivability in the city and better off-road manners at the cost of engagement.

2020 Jeep Compass Diesel Limited Plus vs Trailhawk Variant

The Trailhawk variant of the Compass diesel costs Rs. 26.8 lakh and it’s only available with the automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

The price difference between the Limited Plus AT AWD and Trailhawk AT AWD is Rs. 1.81 lakh. For this additional price, you get the following features:

    • Rock Mode & Low Ratio
    • 17-inch Alloy Wheels (smaller)
    • Hill Descent Control
    • Black Interior w/ Red Inserts
    • Better Water Wading Ability
    • 7-inch Digital MID
    • Different Front & Rear Bumpers
    • Hood Decal

It gets smaller wheels for better off-roading, higher ground clearance, better approach and departure angles and water wading ability. To prevent damage to electronics during serious off-roading, it misses out on the following features:

    • Auto Headlamps
    • Auto Wipers
    • 8-way Power Adjustable Driver Seat w/ Memory
    • Panoramic Sunroof

Unless you intend to frequently do some hardcore off-roading, we’d advise against choosing the Trailhawk variant. It misses out on some luxurious features and costs a fair bit for its abilities off the road. You should instead get the Limited Plus variant and enjoy those features as you’re more likely to do 99% of your driving on reasonably-well-paved roads. The Limited Plus AWD can also handle such roads with ease.

For this sum, you get only one additional feature - a panoramic sunroof. If you’re buying the Trailhawk variant, then it’s worth upgrading to the (O) instead, as it’s offering a large sunroof for a reasonable sum.

Which Variant Of The 2020 Jeep Compass Diesel Should You Buy?

Considering the most affordable Sport Plus variant as our baseline, we see that none of the Compass diesel variants offers the kind of value that the most affordable variants deliver. The Sport Plus variant is our top recommendation for buyers interested in a manual transmission. For automatic and AWD buyers, the Longitude variant should suffice as it gets most of the must-have features. Also, the higher variants are fairly overpriced.

If you find these recommendations too basic for your taste, then the Limited Plus variant is the next most value for money option. It’s available with manual, manual + AWD and automatic + AWD combinations.

The Trailhawk variants are need-based and you should consider them only if you intend to frequently do serious off-roading. Most buyers would be better off with the Limited Plus AT AWD. With the right tyres, it’s plenty capable of handling the occasional dune-bashing and mud-splashing. Only for rock-crawling, the Trailhawk will offer a notable advantage over the regular Compass AWD.

The Night Eagle is a limited edition variant based on Longitude Plus and overpriced by about Rs. 10k. It’s also within reasonable limits. Since the Longitude Plus variant itself is quite overpriced, we can’t recommend the Night Eagle either.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The 2020 Jeep Compass Diesel?

The Jeep Compass diesel gets a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. This engine makes 170PS of power and 350Nm of torque. Compared to its closest rival, the Tucson facelift, it‘s 15PS and 50Nm behind in power and torque output, respectively.

The Compass diesel also has a lower power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratio than the new Hyundai Tucson. The Compass diesel’s mileage figure is on par for the segment as it claims to deliver around 15kmpl to 17kmpl with the AWD automatic and FWD manual drivetrains, respectively.

We believe Jeep missed the mark by not offering automatic without all-wheel-drive. That would have made it quite affordable for buyers who find the front-wheel-drive to be adequate for their use.

What Are The Dimensions Of The 2020 Jeep Compass?

In terms of dimensions, the Jeep Compass is much smaller than the Tucson in almost every way. The Hyundai Tucson has lower ground clearance, though. Compared to the regular Compass, the Trailhawk has 27mm better ground clearance and 17mm taller body. Where we lost that one centimetre is anybody’s guess.
