What Are The Pros And Cons Of Jeep Compass Petrol?

The pros or advantages of Compass petrol 2020 are:

    • Best-in-class power output and power-to-weight ratio.
    • Most affordable premium C-segment SUV in India
    • Most affordable Jeep in India.
    • A luxurious touch. The only car in this segment from a brand that doesn’t make budget hatchbacks and sedans but sells cars in the Rs. 1.0 crore price range.
    • The Sport Plus variant is well-equipped. The higher variants are well-priced too.

The Jeep Compass petrol 2020 has the following shortcomings or problems:

    • 178mm ground clearance looks horrible on a Jeep, which is synonymous with SUV.
    • No manual transmission is higher variants and no automatic in the Sport Plus variant.
    • Questionable long-term reliability of DCT. Non-availability of manual transmission in higher variants further leaves buyers with no choice.
    • Big price jumps between variants.

What Is The Price Of 2020 Jeep Compass?

The Jeep Compass petrol is available in 3 main variants - Sport Plus, Longitude Plus and Limited Plus. The Sport Plus is the most affordable option and it’s only available with a 6-speed manual transmission for Rs. 16.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The Longitude Plus and Limited Plus variants are only available with the automatic transmission and cost Rs. 19.69 lakh and Rs. 21.92 lakh.

There’s also a Night Eagle limited edition variant based on the Longitude Plus variant and it costs Rs. 20.14 lakh (ex-showroom).

Considering the list of features, this is a good starting point. These features will suffice for most buyers for primarily city and occasional highway use. However, it lacks the wow factor we expect when we’re buying a car from a brand, which otherwise only makes super expensive luxury SUVs.

Some of the features you might miss are:

    • Keyless entry with push-button start/stop
    • Power folding mirrors
    • Projector headlamps
    • LED DRLs
    • Rear parking camera
    • Rear parcel shelf
    • Fog lamps
    • Sunroof

Value-wise, this is a good option and worth considering if you don’t want to spend any further for a Jeep. Even reliability wise, this is a solid option as it gets a simpler 6-speed manual transmission and not a dual-clutch automatic. DCTs haven’t done well in the past in terms of long-term reliability considering our harsh climatic and driving conditions. Moreover, the price jump to the Longitude Plus variant is quite steep, although, almost worth it.

The asking price for the Longitude Plus variant over the Sport Plus is almost justified with the features. For a luxurious car like the Compass, an automatic transmission is almost a must-have feature these days. It’s not absurdly overpriced and it also manages to strike a perfect balance between the fairly basic Sport Plus and the extravagant Limited Plus variants. Although, value-wise, the Sport Plus and Limited Plus are better options, we’d happily suggest the Longitude Plus variant to most buyers and it’s our top recommended Compass petrol variant.

2020 Jeep Compass Petrol Longitude Plus vs Night Eagle Variant

The price difference between the Compass petrol Longitude Plus and Night Eagle is Rs. 45,000. The Night Eagle is a special edition variant of the Compass and is based on the Longitude Plus variant only. It’s a cosmetic upgrade and offers the following features:

    • Larger, 18-inch black alloy wheels
    • Black badges
    • Black grille
    • Black interiors
    • Black roof
    • Night Eagle badging

The Night Eagle variant is available in all colours except silver. In our opinion, the features don't quite justify the asking price but it isn’t too expensive either. Whether to buy this variant or not is in your hands as this is a cosmetic upgrade.

2020 Jeep Compass Petrol Longitude Plus vs Limited Plus Variant

The Limited Plus variant of the Compass petrol is also available only with an automatic transmission.  It’s the top-spec variant and costs Rs. 21.92 lakh (ex-showroom).

    • 2 thorax and 2 curtain airbags
    • 8-way power driver seat with memory
    • Auto headlamps

Because of big-ticket features like 4 extra airbags, 2-size larger alloy wheels, power driver seat and panoramic sunroof, the Limited Plus variant of the Compass petrol totally justifies its asking price over the Sport Plus variant. If you want these features, then rest assured that you’re paying a reasonable price for these and buy the Jeep Compass Limited Plus.

Which Variant Of The 2020 Jeep Compass Petrol Should You Buy?

Considering the most affordable Sport Plus variant as our baseline, we see that none of the Compass petrol variants are absurdly overpriced. The Sport Plus offers a good starting point with most of the must-have features but it doesn’t feel exciting. Thankfully, there’s a manual transmission, which means if you intend to keep the car around for a long time, reliability should be less of a concern. The other variants are only available with a DCT type automatic transmission, which is yet to make a name for itself in the long-term reliability aspect.

The Longitude Plus is slightly expensive for what it offers over the Sport Plus variant considering the additional asking price. However, it’s still within reasonable limits. And, it has a better balance between functional and style features. Thus, it earns our top recommendation.

The Limited Plus variant is a better value than the Longitude Plus variant but most of its features are good-to-have at best. So, consider upgrading to the Limited Plus if you have the budget and want these features.

The Night Eagle is a limited edition variant based on Longitude Plus and overpriced by about Rs. 10k. It’s also within reasonable limits. We leave the decision to upgrade to the Night Eagle variant as it’s a cosmetic upgrade.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The 2020 Jeep Compass Petrol?

The Jeep Compass petrol gets a 1.4-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic. This engine makes 163PS of power and 250Nm of torque. Compared to its rivals with a turbo petrol engine, the COmpass’ torque peaks at a fairly high 2500rpm. So, it may not offer similar acceleration at low RPMs.

The Compass petrol also has a much lower torque-to-weight ratio than the Skoda Karoq and Volkswagen T-ROC. Because of its stronger top end, its power-to-weight ratio is the best in class. The Compass petrol’s mileage figure is on par for the segment as it claims to deliver 15kmpl with the manual and 14.1kmpl with the automatic.
