The Kia Sonet is based on the Hyundai Venue. So, the Venue’s engines are the most likely candidates for the Sonet. The Venue is available with a 1.2L Petrol engine paired with a 5-Speed Manual transmission. The power and torque output of this engine is 83PS and 114Nm. There is a 1.5L Diesel engine on offer as well, paired with a 6-Speed Manual transmission. The power and torque output of the diesel engine is 100PS and 240Nm. It is also available with a 1.0L Turbo Petrol engine paired with either a 6-Speed Manual transmission or a 7- Speed DCT type automatic transmission. The power and torque output of the turbo-petrol engine is 120PS and 172Nm.

However, Kia announced that they’re bringing the semi-automatic clutchless manual transmission called IMT (intelligent manual transmission), where the clutch is automated. Hyundai and Kia don’t have this technology available with any engine except the 1.0-litre hybrid turbo petrol. So, we can expect that to make its way to India instead of the regular turbo petrol version - at least with the (intelligent) manual transmission.

    Is Kia Sonet underpowered?

The 1.2L Petrol produces 83PS of maximum power and 114Nm of peak torque. This engine may feel slightly underpowered especially on the highways but this is adequate for city driving. Sonet 1.5L Diesel produces 100PS of maximum power and 240Nm of peak torque. Sonet 1.0L Turbo Petrol produces 120PS of maximum power and 172Nm of peak torque. With these engines, the Sonet's performance should be adequate for Indian conditions.

How Many Cylinders Will the Kia Sonet Engines Have?

Kia Sonet Petrol gets a 1.2L, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine. The Sonet Diesel gets a 1.5L, 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine. The 1.0 turbo petrol engine has 3 cylinders.

    *Based on Hyundai Venue

The 1.2L Petrol engine with the 5-Speed Manual transmission has a fuel efficiency of 17.52kmpl and the Sonet 1.5L Diesel with 6-Speed Manual transmission has a fuel efficiency of 23.4kmpl.

The Sonet 1.0L Turbo Petrol engine with the 6-Speed Manual transmission has a fuel efficiency of 18.2kmpl and the Sonet 1.0L Turbo Petrol with 7- Speed DCT Automatic transmission has a fuel efficiency of 18.15kmpl.

These figures are for Hyundai Venue and the actual efficiency figures should be similar to the Venue’s as they’re based on the same platform and use the same engine-transmission combinations. However, with the IMT and hybrid turbo petrol engine, the Sonet may gain a significant efficiency advantage and could become the segment leader.

Is Kia Sonet Good for Long Drives?

Yes, Kia Sonet is good for long drives as well as city drives. Both petrol and diesel engines are adequate for highway drives. The 1.2-litre petrol engine may require some revving to maintain expressway speeds but otherwise, it’s possible to do triple-digit speeds.

Is Kia Sonet 4x4 or 4WD?

No, Kia Sonet does not get a 4x4 or 4WD drivetrain in India.
