    Mercedes-Benz S-Class S 350 d & S 450 – first drive India review

by Monalisa Saha on Thursday, Mar 22 2018

The new updated 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class flagship sedan is much more than just a facelift, and is an all improved avatar of the already superb luxury sedan. The India-spec Mercedes-Benz S-Class facelift’s primary highlights are its really amazing new semi-autonomous driver assistance system, and the fact that it is the very first BS-VI (Bharat Stage 6) compliant car in India. However, only the diesel version of the new updated S-Class is BS-VI compliant.

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class facelift has got refreshed visual appeal, it looks sharper, bit more upright and slightly bigger than before. The luxury sedan now comes with more distinct looking triple LED DRLs which offers a unique visual appeal. There are new tail lights and revised rear bumper as well.

On the inside, there is a wider display dominating the dashboard, and creature comfort features packed to the brim to offer superb luxury quotient. The infotainment system has been updated in the facelift version, it gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and comes with larger displays that can be operated with individual remotes for the two rear seat displays to access music, navigation, seat settings, start the massage functions, operate seat air circulation and change the ambient lighting from the 64 colours options. The rear left passenger seat is a lap of luxury with a recline and lounge function, which makes front passenger seat move totally ahead and offer a footrest for the rear passenger to take a luxurious in-car nap.

Coming to the under the hood details. The diesel S 350 d gets the 3L inline-six motor offering 282 bhp of power and a hammering 600 Nm of torque, paired to a 9 speed automatic transmission. Despite being more powerful, it has less emission rates owing to its usage of Ad-Blue (urea based diesel exhaust fluid) and the harmful nitrous oxides are broken down into the harmless nitrogen and water. Thus, it is more environment friendly and BS-VI compliant.

Being more environment friendly doesn’t mean less performance though, as this massive 5255mm long saloon has the agility of a small car and offers impressive performance, not to mention optimum ride comfort, as it is targeted at the chauffer driven deep-pocketed lot. It is quick to accelerate and offers an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph.

The petrol version, the S 450 packs in a V6 petrol mill which makes the S-Class a bit quicker than its diesel counterpart, as it also offers the additional max power of 362 bhp along with a massive top torque of 500 Nm. The petrol version is even more agile and butter smooth in its ride and handling.

Then there’s an array of driver assistance systems with a whole lot of semi-autonomous functions such as autonomous emergency braking and steering system, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping system, blind-spot detection system and anti-collision system to offer an added cushion of safety along with a ton of other safety systems and functions.

So, the new updated Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a true flagship model with top-notch comfort, luxury, safety and performance. Thus, for those who can afford it, the S-Class is worth every penny and more (S 350 d priced at Rs. 1.33 Crore and the S 450is priced at 1.37 Crore, ex-showroom India).
