Is The Rider Variant Of 2020 Skoda Rapid Turbo Worth Buying?

The Rider variant is the most affordable one not just for the Rapid 2020 but the most affordable among all compact sedans. It costs just Rs. 7.49 lakh (ex-showroom) and still gets sufficient kit to not feel like completely stripped.

The notable features of the Rider variant are:

  • Mandatory safety kit (2 airbags, ABS, parking sensors)
  • Remote central locking
  • Rear defogger
  • Front and rear armrests
  • Music system with USB, AUX and Bluetooth
  • Automatic AC with rear AC vents
  • Tilt and telescopic steering
  • Electrically adjustable outside mirrors
  • All power windows
  • Front and rear bottle holders
  • Body-coloured bumpers, door handles and outside mirrors
  • 15-inch steel wheels

Its base variant gets all the must-have features except electrically-foldable outside mirrors and driver seat height adjustment, which you may miss in a sedan of this class. But it comes at such a good price that the value quotient is difficult to ignore. This is an amazing value for money and we recommend it for budget buyers.

Is The Rider Plus Variant Of 2020 Skoda Rapid Turbo Worth Buying?

The Rider Plus variant of the Rapid turbo is Rs. 50,000 more expensive than the Rider valiant and costs Rs. 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom). For the incremental price increase of Rs. 50,000, the Rider Plus variant gets the following features only:

  • 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity
  • Window Chrome Garnish

You may still miss a Steering mounted control, Rear Camera, electrically foldable ORVMs and height adjustable driver seat. It’s difficult to justify spending Rs. 50,000 for just a touchscreen infotainment system. If you want better value, then consider getting the Rider variant and get a touchscreen and rear camera as an aftermarket accessory. The Rider Plus variant is not recommended.

The automatic option of Rider Plus variant is Rs. 1.5 lakh more expensive than the manual variant and costs Rs. 9.49 lakh (ex-showroom). For the incremental price increase of Rs. 1.5 lakh, the automatic variants gets 2 additional features:

  • Electronic Stability Control (AT Only)
  • Hill Hold Control (AT Only)

Spending Rs. 1.5 lakh for a 6-speed torque converter type automatic transmission is on a higher side.

Is The Ambition Variant Of 2020 Skoda Rapid Turbo Worth Buying?

The Ambition variant of the Rapid turbo is Rs. 2 lakh more expensive than the Rider Plus variant and costs Rs. 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). For the incremental price increase of Rs. 2 lakh, the Ambition variant gets the following notable features:

  • Electrically adjustable outside mirrors
  • Projector headlamps
  • Steering mounted controls
  • 15-inch alloy wheels
  • Front and rear fog lamps
  • Height adjustable driver seat
  • MID
  • Remote open/close of power windows
  • LED DRLs

You may still miss a parking camera, but you can get that as an aftermarket accessory. Considering the superb pricing of the Rider variant, it’s difficult to justify spending Rs. 2 lakh for these features. So, even if you can buy this variant, if you want better value, then consider getting the base, Rider variant. The Ambition variant is not recommended.

The automatic option of Ambition variant is Rs. 1.3 lakh more expensive than the manual variant and costs Rs. 11.29 lakh (ex-showroom). There are no additional features for the incremental price increase of Rs. 1.3 lakh.

Is The Onyx Variant Of 2020 Skoda Rapid Turbo Worth Buying?

The Onyx variant costs Rs. 10.19 lakh, which is Rs. 20,000 more than the Ambition variant. This variant mostly adds cosmetic features like:

  • 16-inch black alloy wheels
  • Flat bottom steering wheel
  • Leather seat covers
  • Black outside mirrors
  • Black interiors

The rear windscreen curtain is the only functional feature of the Onyx variant, which is exclusive to this variant only. It’s not available even in higher variants. For the price you pay over the Ambition variant, these features are worth. But Onyx’ incremental cost over the Rider variant is not justified. From a value-for-money perspective, we do not recommend this variant.

The automatic option of Onyx variant is Rs. 1.3 lakh more expensive than the manual variant and costs Rs. 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom). There are no additional features for the incremental price increase of Rs. 1.3 lakh.

Is The Style Variant Of 2020 Skoda Rapid Turbo Worth Buying?

The Style variant of the Rapid costs Rs. 11.49 lakh, which is Rs. 1.5 lakh more than Ambition. Additional features of the Style variant over the Ambition variant are:

  • Cruise control
  • Automatic wipers
  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • Rearview camera
  • Automatic headlights
  • Auto-dimming inside mirror
  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Green tinted side windows
  • 2 Front thorax airbags
  • Cooled glove box
  • Spoiler

The Rider variant is so aggressively priced that it’s really difficult for other variants to justify the incremental cost for the additional features. In that sense, the Style variant is no different. But the Style variant doesn’t even justify the Rs. 1.5 lakh cost over the Ambition variant. The Style variant is not recommended.

The automatic option of the Style variant is Rs. 1.5 lakh more expensive than the manual variant and costs Rs. 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom). There are no additional features for the incremental price increase of Rs. 1.5 lakh.

Is The Monte Carlo Variant Of 2020 Skoda Rapid Turbo Worth Buying?

Just like the Onyx variant is a style upgrade over Ambition, similarly, the Monte Carlo is a style upgrade over the Style variant. Monte Carlo variant costs Rs. 11.79 lakh, which is Rs. 30,000 more than the Style variant. It gets:

  • 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels
  • Black grille
  • Black roof
  • Black outside mirrors
  • Steel scuff plates
  • Black spoiler
  • Red stitching on the steering wheel and gear lever boot
  • Red stitching on seat covers
  • Piano black interior accents
  • Black interiors

The incremental cost over the Style variant is justified with these features.

The automatic option of Monte Carlo variant is Rs. 1.5 lakh more expensive than the manual variant and costs Rs. 13.29 lakh (ex-showroom). There are no additional features for the incremental price increase of Rs. 1.5 lakh.

Which Variant Of The 2020 Skoda Rapid Turbo Is The Best Value For Money?

The Rapid turbo’s Rider variant aggressive pricing is making all variants appear overpriced. The base variant is also fairly well equipped with all must-have features. So, it’s worth considering even if you were not previously considering a bigger sedan. The Rider variant is easily our top pick. But, if you want some feel-good features as well, then you should go with the Onyx variant. It’s based on the Ambition trim and it has enough style elements as well to stand out on the road. It covers the functional side with all the features of the Ambition variant and adds some unique style elements as well. Not only that. It’s also the only variant that gets a rear windshield curtain and blue colour option. After the Rider variant, the Onyx is the second top-recommended variant in the 2020 Rapid lineup.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The 2020 Skoda Rapid Turbo BS6?

The Skoda Rapid’s new 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine makes 110PS of power at 5000rpm and 175Nm of torque between 1750 and 4000rpm. It’s a 3-cylinder engine so refinement may not be as good as a 4-cylinder. But, it’s a turbocharged engine, so the torque comes early at 1750rpm and stays there till 4000rpm. Only the Hyundai Verna’s 1.0-litre turbo engine has a wider torque band than this by 250rpm.

Its power output is better than the Ciaz and Yaris but less than Verna, City’s. Rapid’s torque output is the best in class narrowly beating Verna’s 172Nm torque. This same engine is available in the Vento as well.

There’s a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Except the 4th-gen City and the Ciaz, all other petrol compact sedans offer at least a 6-speed manual transmission. The Verna turbo is an exception to this rule as it’s only available with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The Rapid’s fuel efficiency of almost 19kmpl is second only to the Ciaz.
