Honda HR-V a potent product for India; to have a starting tag of Rs. 14 lakhs

by Mahesh Yadav on Thursday, Sep 07 2017

The Honda HR-V is a huge success in the global market which has been selling like hot cakes ever since its launch. The HR-V is a highly aggressive and capable compact SUV model which has been wowing the global crossover/SUV lovers. The SUV/crossover craze is a global one and India is certainly not above it. The Indian SUV market has been growing by leaps and bounds, and the premium SUV segments are also constantly expanding. However, Honda decided not to launch the HR-V in India owing to its premium pricing, and instead launched the Brio based BR-V crossover. Although the Honda BR-V is also very aggressively styled, it could not generate enough interest or sales in India. Interestingly, the HR-V which was never meant for India has got quite some Indian buyers hooked on to it, who keep asking when Honda will be bringing this SUV to India.

Interestingly, the HR-V which was never meant for India has got quite some Indian buyers hooked on to it, who keep asking when Honda will be bringing this SUV to India.

Here we are trying to answer some of the questions for all the Indian car lovers who have a liking for the Honda HR-V:

    Is it coming?

Considering the increasingly popular SUV market of India, Honda is actually expected to bring in its HR-V to our shores. Honda Cars India is planning to launch some popular global products in the country which include the latest iterations of the Civic and the CR-V sometime next year, and the HR-V compact SUV is also expected to follow soon.

    Looks

For the uninitiated, the Honda HR-V made its world premiere as the Honda Vezel compact crossover SUV at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. It is offered in the developed car markets and is called the Vezel in Japan and HR-V in the US car markets. The SUV is based on the 2013 Honda Urban SUV concept and comes with a bold and contemporary styling and a sloping roofline to don an urban crossover look ditching the boxy SUV styling. The SUV flaunts a highly stylized radiator grille with a fat slat, sleek headlight clusters with projector lamps and LED daytime running lights. Its gets body cladding for the wheels, Chevy Beat styled rear door handles mounted high next to the window and large split tail lights. For India, the HR-V is expected to get an additional dollop of chrome garnish to please the chrome loving Indian buyers.

    At Its Heart

Under the hood, the HR-V gets a 1.5L petrol and a 1.6L diesel mill, but for India, it is expected to get the 1.5L unit that powers all diesel models from Honda Cars India. The more powerful 1.8L petrol engine that the new-gen Civic will also get, is another viable option.

    Positioning

The Honda HR-V will be placed above the BR-V in India. It will be the fourth crossover/SUV offering Honda Cars India after the WR-V, BR-V and CR-V.

    Market Rivals

The HR-V will be similar in size to the like of the Creta, but will be touted as a more premium product. In India it will be rivaling against the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Creta, upcoming Renault Captur and the likes.

    Pricing

The Honda HR-V is expected to come to India with a starting price tag of around Rs. 14 lakhs.

    Expected launch date

The HR-V’s Indian launch is speculated to happen by the festive season of 2018.
