Rumour: Hyundai’s New MPV To Rival Mahindra Marazzo, Maruti Ertiga

by Monalisa Saha on Monday, Sep 02 2019

Hyundai is reportedly busy developing a new MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) for the Indian market that could slot below the Creta. The upcoming MPV will, therefore, challenge the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Mahindra Marazzo. Apart from these two models, there’s also the Renault Lodgy in this space.

It is rumoured that the upcoming Hyundai MPV will be based on the Hyundai Venue, and will also share powertrain options with the subcompact SUV. The Venue is available with a choice of a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine and a 1.4-litre turbocharged diesel unit. Both manual and automatic transmission option are available on the Venue.

Hyundai had showcased the Hexa Space MPV concept back at the 2012 Auto Expo, but the plans to launch it somehow got shelved. With the Ertiga (and XL6) taking up the lion's share of the affordable MPV segment, Hyundai is possibly eyeing a pie of Ertiga’s sales.

It is worth noting that Hyundai’s sister concern Kia is also planning to launch the Carnival MPV in India as its second product. The Carnival will, however, be positioned as a premium MPV over the Innova Crysta. It remains to be seen what strategy does the Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai & Kia) take to gain a hold on India’s MPV space. For now, we’re considering Hyundai introduction of the Ertiga rival more of a speculation.
