Rumour: Hyundai Venue To Get Kia Seltos’ Diesel Engine

by Jagdev Kalsi on Tuesday, Aug 27 2019

Hyundai has plans to offer BS6 petrol and diesel engines on the Venue ahead of the 31 April 2020 deadline. The Hyundai Venue was recently launched in the domestic car market with both petrol and diesel engine options. Apart from the two petrol engines (1.2-litre and 1.0-litre, turbocharged), the Venue is available with a 1.4-litre diesel engine as well.

It is now being speculated that instead of upgrading the 1.4-litre diesel engine of the Venue to meet BS6 emission norms, Hyundai will use the Kia Seltos’ BS6 diesel engine for the sub-4m SUV. While it has not been officially confirmed by Hyundai or Kia, the rumour can be backed by logic as well.

It would make sense for Hyundai and Kia to replace the existing 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre diesel engines with the new 1.5-litre diesel engine. While this engine would not fall too short of the 1.6-litre unit on the performance front, it would also lower the variants on offer on the cars on which Hyundai offers both 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre engines (like Verna).

Moreover, having the 1.5-litre diesel engine replace the 1.6-litre unit would also mean that all these cars (with the 1.6-litre engine) would attract lower cess (tax) going forward. A Hyundai Verna, which is longer than 4m and gets a diesel engine over 1.5-litre capacity is taxed at 48%. If the 1.6-litre diesel engine is replaced with a 1.5-litre unit, the taxes would come down from 48% to 45%. At the same time, replacing the 1.4-litre diesel engine with the 1.5-litre unit won’t have any effect on taxation of Venue.

Under the hood of the Kia Seltos, the 1.5-litre diesel engine delivers 115PS of max power and 250 Nm of torque. The Venue’s existing 1.4L diesel motor offers 90 PS and 220 Nm. So there is a possibility that Hyundai might detune the 1.5-litre diesel engine for smaller cars. Expect Hyundai to increase the price of the diesel Venue considerably when it introduces the new diesel engine, given that it would comply with BS6 emission norms. At present, prices of the diesel Venue start from Rs 7.75 lakh and go up to Rs 10.84 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
