Jeep India bracing up to launch a new Maruti Vitara Brezza challenger

by Mahesh Yadav on Sunday, Dec 17 2017

FCA India introduced the much awaited Jeep brand to India, and the Jeep fanatics couldn’t wait to get their hands on an iconic Jeep model. However, their great expectations were soon turned into sore disappointment as the luxurious Jeep models cost fortunes. Soon, the great hype around the arrival of the Jeep brand in India began to die, adding to the dismay of its parent Fiat which is already struggling with its own models in this country. Nevertheless, Fiat India didn’t lose hope and quickly set to work determined to establish the Jeep brand here and reap the benefits of the highly popular SUV market of India. Thus, the Jeep Compass was launched in July this year.

The India-made Jeep Compass is no less than a game changer for the Jeep brand and its parent, Fiat in India. Jeep India’s sales have been moving upwards ever since the arrival of the Compass. The first locally made Compass has also proved to be Jeep’s most successful product in India so far with average monthly sales of 2,000 units; all thanks to its aggressive pricing while retaining all patent Jeep qualities. As FCA India has broken the ice in the rapidly growing Indian SUV market with the Jeep Compass, it would definitely want to push forward and play more aggressive. And that’s exactly what it is doing by preparing to launch a subcompact and more aggressively priced SUV that would fight with India’s current fastest selling SUV – the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.

While we already know that the compact SUV Jeep Renegade has been testing in India for quite some time, and is expected to launch in this country sometime in 2018. So, far the Jeep Renegade was expected to be the entry-level model for Jeep India’s portfolio. However, now it has come to light that FCA is planning to launch a sub-4 meter compact SUV model to fight in the increasingly popular mini SUV space in India.

This piece of development has come from Mike Manley, CEO of Jeep division, which sparked off speculations about a new upcoming mini SUV that would possibly flaunt the Jeep badge.

Right now, details about this new subcompact Jeep SUV are scarce, but if it really comes from the Jeep brand, then we can expect it to be a no-compromise high quality vehicle with great-road capabilities similar to the Compass. Considering the probabilities, it is likely to be based on the Renegade, which is currently the smallest offering from Jeep at present. It is thought that as the Renegade has a length of 4.3 meters, Jeep India could be launching the slashed down version of the Renegade in India with a new moniker in order to avail the tax benefits of the small cars in India.

However, it could also be a new SUV sibling of the Fiat Argo and Cronos. In that case it would be a hatch-turned-crossover or a soft-roader.

In short, we really don’t know if the upcoming subcompact SUV will be a Fiat or Jeep (we would like the later for sure). However, we know that it will take on the Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford Ecosport and the likes, and is likely to be tagged under the Rs. 10 lakhs slab.
