BMW had revealed the 8 Series concept last year in 2017 and the luxury automaker is preparing to reveal the production model sometime later in 2018. However, the production spec of the BMW 8 Series concept has got leaked on the internet revealing almost all about the exterior of the upcoming new BMW 8 Series coupe.
Positioned above the 7 Series luxury saloon, the upcoming BMW 8 Series will replace 6 Series sedan as the BMW’s new halo offering. Also, looking at the leaked images, the production model gets toned down details bringing elegance to the coupe as compared to the very powerful appearance of the 8 Series concept. While the 8 Series concept lacked in subtleness with its big and imposing design theme coupled with lots of aggression but the production model despite carrying forward the prominent features of the concept loses the aggressive nature and gives it a classy and elegant appeal.
According to the leaked images, the production spec gets the massive kidney grille induced in chrome, flanked by the sharp swept back headlamps that get full LEDs as seen on the 8 Series concept along with the same front bumper retaining the sporty appeal with massive air intakes. Apart from these, providing the BMW 8 Series a strong visual presence and has that stately feel is the massive hood. Talking about the rear, the images show wide and flat styling with a ducktail spoiler, massive wraparound LED taillights, slim vertical air vents and a carbon fibre diffuser with twin trapezoidal exhausts. However, unlike the front, the rear of the BMW 8 Series production model differs from the concept that had a more seamless design integrated with the rest of the body. But, it would be too early to comment on the designing till the automaker reveals the production model.
Under the hood, the upcoming BMW 8 Series will offer the 830d with a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine. Also, we can see a plug-in hybrid version of the model too. As confirmed by BMW, there will also be an M badged version with loads of carbon fibre thrown in the mix, while power will come from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo, V8 petrol motor seen on the new M5 and should make more than 500 bhp. Marking BMW's return to 24 Hours of Le Mans since 2011, there will also be a M8 GTE race car as well.
Based on the automaker's new CLAR architecture that underpins the new generation 7 Series, the BMW 8 Series is expected to be available in a host of versions including the 840i and 850i, according to the reports in the market. Apart from these, a superfast M860i xDrive M Performance variant is confirmed and will come with the huge 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 engine that currently empowers the M760Li xDrive M Performance.
With these, we can definitely expect the upcoming BMW 8 Series coupe to set new benchmark for the automaker in the luxury space. When launched, the luxury coupe will take against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-class and Bentley Continental GT. For now, we can expect the automaker to officially reveal the production spec of the 2019 BMW 8 Series at the upcoming 2018 Geneva Motor Show. However, BMW has not confirmed it yet but looking at the leaked images, we can definitely expect the automaker to make an official announcement soon.
