The Skoda Karoq compact SUV has been anticipated to launch in the Indian car market for quite some time now. As the Czech car maker’s flagship SUV Kodiaq is doing well in India, the company was expected to bring in the Karoq to India to expand and reinforce its new SUV lineup in the country last year. However, with the rumour mills spinning high that the new Skoda Kamiq is an India-bound model, it was also speculated that the Karoq might not at all come to India. Now, as per the latest reports, the Skoda Karoq’s launch in India is very much confirmed and it might be launching very soon.
The Skoda Karoq compact 5-seater SUV that sits below the Kodiaq broke its cover in 2017 and replaced the Yeti SUV in the global market. It is already selling internationally and now, finally preparing to hit the hot Indian SUV market.
As per the latest reports, Skoda Auto India has already commenced the production of Karoq in the company’s facility in Aurangabad. The Karoq SUV will come to India via the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route, and the vehicle will be assembled locally in the country. The Skoda Karoq is likely to launch in India by May, 2019.
The Karoq is based on the Volkswagen Group’s global MQB platform, which also underpins the other skoda models like the Kodiaq SUV, and Superb and Octavia sedans. In terms of looks, the Karoq also shares the design language with the Kodiaq. The SUV flaunts the patent butterfly grille with stylized sweptback headlights, which are stacked just above the fog lights similar to that of the Kodiaq SUV.
In India, the Skoda Karoq is expected to arrive in both the petrol and diesel guises. The petrol Karoq would pack in a 1.5L turbocharged petrol mill, while the diesel avatar is likely to get the 2.0L motor. Skoda might also power the Karoq with a BS-VI compliant 1.6L diesel unit paired with a DSG transmission.
Like the Kodiaq, the Karoq will also be a premium product, but only smaller in size along with a lesser price list. The upcoming Skoda Karoq premium compact SUV is expected to be priced in the range of around Rs. 25 to 30 lakhs. The Skoda Karoq already has tough competition to face post its launch in the highly competitive Indian car market. The Karoq will be locking its horns with the likes of the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, its own cousin Volkswagen Tiguan and the latest product in the segment – the Tata Harrier.
The Jeep Compass and the Tata Harrier will be the toughest competitors for the upcoming Skoda Karoq. The Jeep Compass is already a highly established product in this segment and currently leads its class. The all-new Tata Harrier on the other hand, is all set to become the new segment ruler soon, as per the reports, as the model comes with spectacular design and features along with a killer price.
The Tata Harrier has a price range of Rs. 12.69 lakhs - 16.25 lakhs, while the Jeep Compass’ price ranges from Rs. 14.95 lakhs to Rs. 21.07 lakhs (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). Thus, both the amazing SUV models are priced at a much lower slab as compared to the speculated pricing of the Skoda Karoq.
