Czech automaker Skoda is focusing on expanding its Indian portfolio in a big way and also to establish itself in the highly popular SUV market of the country. Skoda has already launched the highly awaited Skoda Kodiaq premium SUV in the car market of India, and is now speculated to be preparing to launch the Karoq SUV.

As per the reports, a reliable source close to the development has confirmed that the Czech car maker will be bringing in the new Skoda Karoq in India by the end of 2018. Post its launch in the country, the new Karoq will be the second SUV offering from the house of Skoda Auto India and will be placed below the newly launched Kodiaq. While the Kodiaq is a full sized 7-seater SUV model, the Karoq is a comparatively compact 5-seater SUV that will go up against the Hyundai Tucson and the likes. The Karoq is the global replacement for the popular Skoda Yeti, which has been long discontinued in India. Currently, the Kodiaq is the only SUV from Skoda India.

As the Skoda Karoq’s India launch is not confirmed yet, details regarding the India-sepc version are yet not available. Nevertheless, the rumour mills don’t stop and it is being speculated that the Karoq is likely get equipped with a 1.4 litre TSI petrol mill that offers 147 hp of power and 250 Nm of torque, while a 2.0 litre TDI diesel option delivering 141 hp and 320 Nm would also be there. The same engines also do the duty under the hood of the Skoda Octavia. The engines are expected to be paired with a 9 speed DSG automatic transmission as standard. The Karoq is also expected to come in both FWD and AWD options on both petrol and diesel versions. Internationally, the Karoq gets a range of five engine choices offering power from 113 hp to 188 hp.

In terms of dimensions, the new Skoda Karoq measures 4,382 mm long, 1,841 mm wide, 1,603 mm tall and rides on a wheelbase measuring 2,638 mm. It offers a cargo space of 521 litres that can be expanded to up to a huge 1,630 litres by folding the rear seats. The SUV is based on Skoda’s parent company Volkswagen's MQB platform. This platform also underpins several Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda models in the global markets.

Just like the Kodiaq, the Karoq also flaunts the company’s new design language adopted for the new-age models. The Karoq shares many design cues and features with its bigger sibling Kodiaq and the Volkswagen Tiguan. The Karoq’s global model is loaded with features like LED headlamps, a large 9.2 inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, and several driver assist features like Lane Assist, Park Assist and Traffic Jam Assist systems. The SUV’s safety package includes Blind Spot Detect system, predictive pedestrian protection and Emergency Assist system among much more. It will be interesting to see, how many of these premium features actually makes it to the India-spec Karoq.
