Mahindra & Mahindra is preparing to introduce their all electric vehicles at the upcoming 2018 Auto Expo in India. One of the most prominent electric vehicles by the automaker, the KUV100 has been spied testing on the Indian roads for the first time. The car has been spied testing with mild camouflage revealing the design and styling cues of the EV.

In terms of looks, the spied vehicle is quite similar to the 2017 Mahindra KUV100 NXT. Although, it looks similar but it surely misses out on exhaust pipe and the engine noise. The lack of engine noise confirms that the automaker is testing the electric version of the compact SUV KUV100. It is also wrapped in Fiery Orange shade with a Midnight black rear bumper as well as the left rear window is covered up and is equipped with black piping that runs towards the bottom.

According to the reports, Mahindra is currently working on its future zero emission vehicles that include electric powered KUV100 and XUV500 and aims to roll out two new EVs by 2019. While the electric powered KUV100 is expected to hit the market in late 2018, XUV500 EV might launch in late 2019. The Indian auto major is currently dominating Indian EV market and it wants to consolidate its position keeping an eye towards the future competition. A massive EV fleet order from EESL is helping the brand with its zero emission vehicle project.

Currently, Mahindra is promoting the use of electric vehicles in the Indian market. In order to execute the plan well, the automaker is leaving no stone unturned by going under partnerships with different taxi service providers apart from introducing electric vehicles in the country. Also, Mahindra is aiming to improve its production capacity. Although, it manufactures 100 EVs per day and preparing to increase the number of production to 1,000 units per month in next six months and by 2019, the number is expected to reach to 5,000 units.

However, considering Indian government’s Mission EV 2030, the country will adopt zero emission pure electric mobility by 2030, hence, Mahindra has a good chance to strengthen its position before other automakers introduce their electric vehicles in the country. Apart from Mahindra, another automaker working on the introduction of EVs in the Indian market is Tata Motors. The rival is working on its electric powered Tiago, Tigor and Nano currently. Also, Nissan announced that it will bring Leaf EV as well as Tesla too confirmed entering the Indian market with its Model 3 sedan.

Hence, in order to keep it up with the competitors, Mahindra has invested Rs. 500 crore for the EV technology development till date and has plans to invest Rs. 600 crore more in next 2-3 years. Mahindra is also developing new powertrains for its upcoming electric cars, which could produce a power ranging between 41 bhp to 204 bhp. Along with this, it is expected to introduce higher capacity batteries in the upcoming EVs to boost up the driving range as well. Also, the automaker is focusing on building charging infrastructure that will eventually help in increasing its EV business in the market.
