Two new Jeep SUV models are bracing up to hit the Indian market in coming 2 years
Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA) India is focusing solely on the Jeep brand in the country, and is in process of pulling out the Fiat brand, which despite a great fan following is not attracting sustainable number of buyers. The iconic American SUV brand Jeep, on the other hand also has a greater fan following in the country and is also attracting good amount of buyers, especially ever since the first India-made Jeep model – Compact launched. FCA India will be focusing on expanding the Jeep portfolio and in boosting its sales in the country.
Jeep India is already known to be working on bringing in the rugged top-end Compass Trailhawk edition, which has been caught by the spying cameras many times testing on the Indian roads. The Jeep Compass Trailhawk is expected to launch in India by mid-2019. Jeep will also launch the latest generation models of the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee in the car market of India in the coming months. Recently, FCA has also stated that the automotive group will be launching two more India-specific Jeep SUV models, and that these will be launched by 2020-21.
As per the reports, Jeep is presently working on a sub-4 meter SUV model based on the platform of the new generation Fiat Panda. This mini SUV is slated to launch by 2020. It is going to be locally developed and manufactured at FCA India’s Ranjangaon facility, which currently manufactures only the Compass. This new upcoming sub-4 meter SUV is likely to be priced under Rs. 10 lakhs. This upcoming new mini Jeep SUV will be fighting in the highly popular and fast growing Indian subcompact SUV segment, and rival the likes of the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300 and the yet to launch Hyundai Styx.
It is also being said that Jeep might be developing a pair of new petrol and diesel engines to power this new subcompact SUV. The SUV brand currently has a 1.4L turbocharged petrol and a 1.6L turbocharged diesel motor, but the usage of these engine will increase the cost of this model. Hence, FCA is expected to develop a new 1.5L derivative of the 1.6L unit that will also be BSVI compliant. Similarly, a smaller derivative of the 1.4L or a 1.2 litre petrol mill is expected.
Apart from the sub-4 meter compact SUV, Jeep is also preparing to launch an India-made new full-sized 7-seater premium SUV model. This locally manufactured new Jeep SUV will be fighting in the D-segment of the Indian SUV market. Post its Indian launch, this model will be locking its horns with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Skoda Kodiaq. This upcoming premium SUV will be based on the company’s Small Wide platform which also underpins the Jeep Compass. This model will also be developed at the Ranjangaon manufacturing plant. This new 7-seater Jeep SUV might also be exported to the other developing car markets. Although, it is too early to say anything about this SUV’s powertrains, it is expected to pack in a 2.0L turbocharged diesel motor that is BSVI compliant.
