Upcoming Jeep Grand Commander patent images leaked out

by Monalisa Saha on Wednesday, Dec 13 2017

The iconic American sports utility vehicle manufacturer, Jeep is known to be working on several new models to refresh its lineup. There also have been a lot of on-and-off speculations about a new three-row Jeep SUV. However, nothing seemed to be coming out as concrete evidence about a three-row SUV actually being on the anvil. Probably the company was super busy with the unveiling of the very important new generation Wrangler and also preparing for the upcoming Grand Cherokee facelift. Both models being highly significant for the brand, it is only natural that Jeep was tied up with the preparations of both. Nevertheless, the reports about the new three-row Jeep model are back again, and this time with some solid base. The patent sketches of the upcoming model have been leaked online, and so we know that the speculations have been true all the time.

The latest reports about the new upcoming three-row Jeep SUV are based on the leaked patent sketches, which were published by a Chinese automotive portal. Going by these drawing, it is apparent that Jeep is actually planning to develop such a model and its design has been finalized. This new upcoming model will be reportedly christened as the Grand Commander. More interestingly, the patent sketches were leaked from the company’s filings to the trademark office in China, and not America.

According to the Chinese reports, the brand new Jeep Grand Commander will be making its world premiere by April in Beijing. However, there are yet no official confirmations, and there are no details about this SUV’s arrival in the U.S or other any car markets of the world. Thus, it is thought that the new three-row Jeep will be a China specific model. This could be true, as many auto majors are building China specific products, as the country is the world’s largest car market and obviously most important for the automakers.

The Grand Commander will also be most probably built in China at a new manufacturing facility. The Jeep Commander, which was the manufactured between 2005 and 2010 was last Jeep model that was larger than the Grand Cherokee. It was basically a stretched Grand Cherokee version, but was never a great success, but that was before the current global SUV frenzy.

Thus, it seems to be logical for Jeep to give another shot to this large three-row SUV model. It is also possible that Jeep will decide to bring the new three-row SUV to the international car markets at a later date. However, the Grand Commander would surely receive design modifications to suit the global markets, and so will be the under the hood specifications.

As per the reports, for the Chinese market, the new upcoming Jeep Grand Commander will be equipped with a 270hp 4-cylinder 2.0L turbocharged mill. Probably this is the same motor that powers the new-gen Wrangler. However, this engine will certainly not be offered in the other markets including the U.S, and we expect a more powerful one.
