It has been known for some time that Jeep is considering bringing out an all-new entry-level SUV model to be positioned below the Jeep Renegade. This new upcoming small SUV from the house of famed American SUV manufacturing brand will be primarily aimed at the European car markets as well as the developing markets such as India. Needless to say, this new small SUV will be taking over the current position of the Renegade in Jeep’s global lineup, as the smallest and cheapest Jeep model.
Speaking on the development, the chief executive officer at Jeep Mike Manley told the media during an interview that the concept of a smaller model than the Renegade is very interesting to the company and the company is now actively looking at this project. Although, there are no concrete details regarding this new upcoming Jeep SUV, it is thought to be a sub-4 meter SUV model and it could be based on the Renegade’s platform that which is shared by the Fiat 500X. However, it is also thought that the new model’s subcompact dimensions would most probably need a new more light weight platform.
Going by Jeep’s Italian owner Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) platform strategy, the new upcoming Jeep model could be based on the platform of a Fiat branded model. One of the possible platforms that could spawn out this new upcoming Jeep entry-level SUV is the next generation Panda city car’s platform.
While there is a general rise in demands for all SUV and crossover models in all shapes and sizes, the compact and subcompact SUVs are particularly gaining increasing popularity in many markets. This is because the small SUVs are more versatile in terms of usage, and their compact dimensions make them more city friendly. The compact and subcompact SUV models are thus preferred by the urban SUV buyers in many countries. Speaking on the potential markets, Manley said that the company has witnessed the trend of moving towards smaller SUVs in the car markets of Europe, while the car market of Latin America might also be a potential one.
Right now, the details regarding the new subcompact SUV model from the house of Jeep are really scarce, but they are expected to be revealed on 1st of June 1, when Jeep’s plan for the coming 5 years (2018-2023) will be announced. This will be one of the key announcements in FCA business strategy. FCA head Sergio Marchionne will be announcing the group’s 5 year plans for the group and all its brands, namely Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Lancia Ram and Dodge.
Thus, we can expect a formal announcement on the launch plans of the new upcoming entry-level Jeep model. When this model makes its global debut, it is also expected to make it to the car market of India, as India is similar to the South American car markets. Currently, India is expecting the launch of the Jeep Renegade towards the end of this year or early next year.
