In this segment, the Volkswagen Polo also gets a turbo-petrol engine option, but the i20’s turbo petrol engine is more powerful, offering 10PS more power than the Polo. The i20 turbo-petrol engine is available with a choice of an auto-clutch manual transmission and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

We would have liked it more if the i20 Magna also featured height adjustable driver seat and adjustable rear headrests. However, being the base variant, Magna is pretty well loaded, so you don’t have to compromise on any major feature; and that’s the reason why it is not aggressively priced.

    Sportz Variant

The i20 Sportz variant is Rs 80,000 more expensive than the Magna variant. In this variant, the 1.2-litre petrol engine comes paired with a CVT type automatic transmission option as well, and for this you’ll have to shell out an additional amount of Rs 1 lakh.

According to our internal data, the i20 Sportz variant’s added features over Magna justify its asking price. So value-wise, choosing this variant is a sensible decision. This variant is especially suitable for all those buyers who are looking for features like rear parking camera, touchscreen infotainment system, height adjustable driver’s seat and electrically foldable ORVMs in their car. The Sportz CVT variant’s additional cost of Rs 1 lakh over the manual version is also reasonable, so you can go for the Sportz automatic as per your choice and requirement.

The Hyundai i20 Sportz variant is also available with the more powerful 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine option, for which you need to spend an extra Rs 1.2 lakh.

The 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine option not only offers added performance, but also the convenience of
auto-clutch manual transmission and 2 additional features: leather seat upholstery and metal pedals.

Although performance upgrade is more of an emotional decision, according to our data, the price jump for the 1.0-litre engine with ACMT over the 1.2-litre engine with the manual transmission is a bit pricey. We would have really liked it if the Sportz variant came with features like auto AC and adjustable rear headrests.

    Asta Variant

The 2020 i20 Asta is Rs 1.10 lakh more expensive than the Sportz variant. This variant is also available with the 1.2-litre engine paired with the CVT automatic option, which will cost you an additional Rs 1 lakh over the manual transmission.

As the Asta DCT’s price is exceeding the Rs 10 lakh price mark, and the ACMT version’s cost is less than Rs 10 lakh, their on-road prices will differ by around Rs 1.15 lakh in many states.

According to our internal data, the Asta variant’s added features easily justify its additional asking price of Rs 1.10 lakh. However, you should keep in mind that this variant mostly adds feel-good features.

If you wish to go for the 1.2-litre petrol engine with the CVT transmission, then you can go for this variant. The buyers who are considering the Asta variant with this engine with the manual transmission, should go for the Asta Optional instead.

The buyers wishing to go for the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine with ACMT should choose the Asta variant, as it offers better value than the Sportz variant. We wish the Asta variant also offered auto-dimming IRVM and adjustable rear headrests to add to the overall value. If you want to choose the 1.0-litre turbo engine with the DCT, then we suggest you go for the Asta Optional variant.

    Asta(O) Variant

The 2020 Hyundai i20 Asta Optional is the top-end variant and is available only with the 1.2-litre engine with the manual transmission, and 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with the dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Asta(O) variant is around Rs 50,000 more expensive over the price tag of the Asta.

Which Variant Of The 2020 Hyundai i20 Petrol Should You Buy?

If you are planning to buy the i20, then we would suggest that you first finalize which powertrain combination you want to go for. The 1.2-litre petrol engine will not impress you in terms of performance, but it will be adequate for daily city use. This one will offer you the same sort of performance that the older the i20 used to offer.

If you want to settle for the 1.2-litre engine with the manual transmission in a basic variant, then you can definitely go for the base Magna variant. Despite being the base variant, the i20 Magna covers almost all must-have features and even offers a few more.

Also read - New Hyundai i20 vs Hyundai Verna - Price, Specs, Features, Mileage Comparison

The i20 Sportz variant with the 1.2MT powertrain is our top recommendation, as it is a good balance of all the essential features and some modern-day features. Although the other variants offer better value for money than the Sportz, it’s not actually as bad on value as it appears.

The Asta Optional variant offers value as well. So, if you can extend your budget for additional safety and feel-good features, then you should choose this variant.
