What are the Engine Specifications of The Mahindra Thar 2020?

The Mahindra Thar comes equipped with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that can generate 150PS of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque. The Thar diesel gets a 2.2-lire turbo diesel engine that can produce 130PS of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque.

It is worth noting that the petrol engine not only offers more power than the diesel engine, but its peak torque is also achieved at lower engine revs. This should help the petrol engine offer better performance while off-roading.

Both the engines come with 4WD drivetrain, and are paired with a choice of 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter type automatic transmission.

Compared to the older model of the Thar, the 2020 model is wider, but a tad bit shorter. The 2020 Thar has 20mm longer wheelbase, but its ground clearance is also more compared to its predecessor. The 2020 Thar’s rampover angle is better than before. Compared to its predecessor, the new Thar’s approach angle has reduced a bit, but the departure angle is better. The 2020 Mahindra Thar comes with a water wading depth of 650mm and it is available with 16-inch and 18-inch wheels options.

    Mahindra Thar AX Standard Variant

The Thar AX Standard variant is available only with a petrol engine, and it is priced at Rs 9.80 lakh. This variant comes with a soft top and has a 6 seater configuration. Thus, at its rear there are 2 side facing benches which can accommodate 4 passengers.

This variant offers all the standard safety features, apart from which it also has day/night IRVM. The AX Standard’s key functional features include tilt steering, manual AC, 12V socket, central locking, front power windows and manually adjustable ORVMs. It comes with 16-inch steel wheels and LED tail lamps.

As this variant lacks off-road specific features, such as locking differential and roll cage, we would recommend that you consider a higher variant of the Thar.

    Mahindra Thar AX Variant

With the petrol engine, the Thar AX is Rs 85,000 more expensive than the AX Standard variant. The AX variant also comes with the diesel engine option, which is tagged at Rs 10.85 lakh, making it Rs 20,000 more expensive than its petrol counterpart.

The AX variant mainly offers 2 additional features over the AX Standard -- side footsteps and mechanical locking differential.

    Mechanical Locking Differential

In case of the petrol version, the on-road price of the AX will be much more than Rs 85,000 over the price of the AX Standard variant. This is because in most states additional tax is incurred on cars worth over Rs 10 lakh. Buyers who are looking for an affordable variant of the Thar should at least go for the AX variant, so that you can confidently participate in off-road events with your Thar.

However, for buyers who are comparing any 2wd SUV with the Thar, the AX variant would seem too basic. This is because this variant lacks some basic features like electrically adjustable ORVMs, audio system with steering-mounted controls and remote keyless entry.

Hence, if you are considering buying the Thar as a personal vehicle or as a primary vehicle, then consider going for a higher variant.

    Mahindra Thar AX Optional Variant

The AX Optional variant is Rs 1.25 lakh more expensive than the AX. This variant is available with both petrol and diesel engine options.

The AX Optional differs from the AX variant in terms of roof and seating configuration. While the AX comes with a soft top, the AX Optional comes with a soft convertible roof, which can be easily folded. With the diesel engine, this variant also offers the option of a hard top, which adds a nominal premium of Rs 10,000 to the price.

Apart from these, the AX Optional variant comes with a 4 seater configuration instead of 6 seater. Thus, this variant can accommodate 2 seats at front and 2 at its rear. The rear seats come with recline option and get adjustable headrests as well.

The following table offers the roof and seating comparison between the Thar AX Optional and the AX variants:

The Diesel Thar AX Optional with hard top is the most affordable variant of the Thar that can be used as a regular personal vehicle as well. As it comes with a hard top, it can be parked in any public place. It also has 2 front-facing rear seats, which offer relatively more comfort to the rear passengers, while also offering more safety as compared against the side-facing benches.

When it comes to the convertible top version, we think that the Thar AX Optional is a bit expensive over the AX variant, and this is true in case of both petrol and diesel engines. The Thar AX Optional variant is suitable for off-road purpose as it features roll cage and doesn’t lack anything major in terms of off-roading requirements.

    Mahindra Thar LX Variant

The Thar LX is Rs 59,000 more expensive than the AX Optional with the petrol engine, while in case of diesel it is Rs 75,000 costlier.

With the petrol engine, the Thar LX variant comes with a factory-fitted hard top. The LX variant offers a number of additional safety features such as electronic stability control, fog lamps and tyre pressure monitoring system.

In terms of entertainment, this variant offers a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with steering mounted audio controls. Some of the key additional functional features of this variant include: lumbar support, cruise control, electrically adjustable ORVMs and brake locking differential -- for enhanced off-roading assistance.

As far as style is concerned, this variant flaunts a differently designed front bumper, 18-inch alloy wheels, coloured MID and more stylish AC controls. You can check all the added features of the Thar LX variant in the following table:

According to our internal data, the LX variant’s additional features have a perceived value worth more than Rs 1 lakh, which is way more than its additional premium. So, the LX variant is a very worthy upgrade over AX Optional for all the buyers who wish to use the Thar as a daily personal vehicle.

This variant also offers the option of automatic transmission with both the engines. With the petrol engine, you will have to pay an additional amount of Rs 1,06,000 for the automatic transmission, while for the diesel automatic you need to shell out Rs 80,000 extra. Clearly, for the torque converter type automatic transmission this added premium is justified.

Which Variant Of The 2020 Mahindra Thar Should You Buy?

For those buyers who are looking to use the Thar as a primary vehicle, the top LX variant with the hard top is the most suitable option. You may go for any powertrain option in this variant, as per your choice. However, you should keep in mind that this variant is strictly a 4 seater model. Moreover, while it is a well-equipped variant in the Thar range, it offers less features when compared to other cars in the Rs 12-13 lakh price range.

The Thar LX variant lacks a number of convenience features including rear parking camera, electrically foldable ORVMs, auto AC, auto-dimming IRVM, etc. Thus, you would have to give a miss to these nice features for the off-roading potential of the Thar.

For the off-road enthusiasts, the Thar AX Optional variant is recommended, as this variant comes with off-road specific features like mechanical locking differential and roll cage, and offers less electronic features.

However, the AX Optional Petrol comes with only the option of a soft convertible top, while the Diesel version offers both convertible and hard top options.

If you are eyeing the Thar only for its rugged visual appeal and its off-road ready personality, and wish to buy only a lower variant, then you can go for the AX variant. However, it is important to remember that the Thar AX variant features only a non-easily removable soft top, which you can’t close or open on the go.

What are the Colour Options of The Mahindra Thar 2020?

The Mahindra Thar is available for sale in 6 exterior colour options, namely -- Beige, Red, Black, Grey, Maroon and Aquamarine. We think that the Thar looks best in the Grey exterior colour. It is worth noting that the Thar AX trim’s variants are offered only in black or red colours.
