What Are The Pros And Cons Of Tata Tiago Petrol?

The pros or advantages of Tata Tiago petrol are:

  • A reasonably long list of features including auto AC, projector headlamps, LED DRLs and keyless entry
  • The only petrol hatchback in its segment with a 4-star GNCAP crash test rating
  • Satisfactory ground clearance of 170mm for a hatchback and an option of 181mm with the NRG
  • For a normal petrol engine, the peak torque comes at a fairly low 3300rpm, which should help with drivability in the city

The Tata Tiago petrol has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • 3-cylinder engines can’t match the inherent refinement of a 4-cylinder engine; most of its rivals have a 4-cylinder engine
  • The base variant is too basic even for buyers on a tight budget and misses out on several must-have features
  • Base model only gets 13-inch wheels with skinny 155-section tyres
  • The XT NRG, which gets a reasonably well-balanced set of features doesn’t get an AMT automatic transmission option

What Is The Price Of Tata Tiago Petrol Variants?

The Tata Tiago petrol gets a manual and an automatic transmission. The petrol-manual range starts at Rs. 5.60 lakh and goes up to Rs. 7.15 lakh. The petrol-automatic variants cost between Rs. 6.95 lakh and Rs. 7.70 lakh. Among these variants, there are also 2 Tiago NRG variants, which is a beefed up version of the Tiago. The Tiago NRG gets all around cladding for a rugged look and a higher ground clearance.

Tata Tiago Petrol XE - Base Model Features & Review

The base model of the Tata Tiago petrol costs Rs. 5.60 lakh and it’s only available with a petrol-manual powertrain. It gets some notable features like:

For a car costing more than Rs. 6.0 lakh on-road, the Tiago XE doesn’t get several must-have features like:

  • Day/night internal mirror
  • Music system
  • Wheel covers
  • Power mirrors
  • Power windows
  • Remote central locking
  • Body-coloured door handles

Because of these critical missing features, we won’t recommend buying this variant even to budget buyers.

Tata Tiago Petrol XE vs XTO Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

The Tata Tiago XTO petrol costs Rs. 6.0 lakh, which is Rs. 40,000 more than the XE. The XTO variant of the Tiago petrol is also available with a manual transmission only.

The XTO petrol variant of the Tiago almost completely justifies the incremental price gap. So, you’re not compromising on value, but it doesn’t get a music system. If you are okay with adding an aftermarket music system, then the XTO is a fantastic option for budget buyers as it gets most of the must-have features.

Tata Tiago Petrol XTO vs XT Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

The Tata Tiago XT petrol variant costs Rs. 6.40 lakh, which is Rs. 40,000 more than the XTO petrol-manual. For an additional Rs. 55,000, you can also get the Tiago XT petrol with the AMT automatic transmission and it has an ex-showroom price of Rs. 6.95 lakh.

This is the most affordable variant with an automatic transmission. For most budget buyers, who don’t want to fiddle with aftermarket accessories, the XT variant is an ideal choice. So, budget buyers can choose between the XTO and XT variants depending on their budget.

Tata Tiago Petrol XT vs XT NRG Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

The Tata Tiago XT NRG variant costs Rs. 6.70 lakh, which is Rs. 30,000 more than the XT petrol-manual. This trim of the Tiago doesn’t get an automatic transmission.

The XT NRG variant offers good value and covers the basics well by offering most of the must-have features. For some buyers, it can also completely eliminate the need for a small SUV like the Punch or Exter with its rugged styling and higher ground clearance. So, it earns our top recommendation. The only notable shortcoming we find with this variant is that it doesn't get an automatic transmission.

Tata Tiago Petrol XT NRG vs XZ NRG Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

The Tata Tiago XZ NRG costs Rs. 7.15 lakh with the manual and Rs. 7.70 lakh with the automatic transmission. This variant is Rs. 45,000 more than the XT NRG variant.

Because of the high value features like touchscreen and alloy wheels, this variant ends up offering better value than the XT NRG. So, you can also consider upgrading to this trim if you want some of these features in your car. While Tiago automatic buyers can consider XT AMT, the jump to XZ NRG AMT is more than worth it even if you ignore the cost of some good-to-have features.

Tata Tiago Petrol XZ NRG vs XZ Plus Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

At Rs. 7.15 lakh for the manual and Rs. 7.70 lakh for the automatic, the Tata Tiago XZ Plus petrol costs the same as the XZ NRG.

While this trim drops some features of the NRG, it still justifies the incremental cost of upgrade over the XZ NRG. If you value these features, don’t like the Tiago NRG style or don’t need the higher ground clearance, then the XZ Plus is also worth considering. This recommendation is value for Tiago manual as well as automatic buyers.

Which Variant Of The Tata Tiago Petrol Should You Buy?

The base XE variant of the Tiago petrol-manual is too basic and has barely any must-have features. So, we’ll recommend getting at least the XTO variant. However, if you don’t want to install an aftermarket music system, then the XT variant will suit the needs of most budget buyers.

If you can stretch your budget further, then the XT NRG is a good choice as it offers a unique styling and better ground clearance. Thus, it may completely eliminate the need for a small SUV like Punch or Exter for some buyers. Moreover, it also offers better value than all lower trims.

From here, both the higher variants are worth considering and offer better value than the XT NRG. However, they mostly add features, which are good-to-have for a car of this class and at this price.

For the Tiago automatic buyers, the XT is a good choice while the XZ NRG and XZ Plus are also worth upgrading. None of the 3 Tiago automatic variants manage to earn our top recommendation as with the Tiago manual. We wish the Tiago also offered the XT NRG automatic trim, which offers a good balance of good-to-have and must-have features while offering a decent value for money for incremental price over the base trim.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Tata Tiago Petrol?

The Tiago has a 3-cylinder normal petrol engine which makes 86PS of power and 113Nm of torque. While its torque comes in sooner compared to the normal petrol engine of its rivals, it’s worth noting that all of its competitors offer a 4-cylinder engine. These are inherently balanced and are smoother than 3-cylinder engines.

The Tiago’s mileage figures are on par with its rivals except for the Swift, which has a significantly better mileage output.

What Are The Dimensions Of The Tata Tiago?

The Tiago offers a good middle ground in terms of dimensions as it's larger than the Ignis but a fair bit shorter than the Swift. The Tiago’s ground clearance is also somewhere in the middle for the segment at 170mm. So it’s better than the Nios and Swift, but less than that of the Ignis. If you want better ground clearance, then you can also pick the Tiago NRG, which technically offers the best-in-class ground clearance of 181mm.

Another notable spec here is the Tiago’s base trim’s wheel size. It now offers 13-inch wheels with skinny 155-section tyres. When even the Kwid offers 14-inch wheels with 165-section tyres, we expect the Tiago to at least match the Kwid in that aspect even with their XE base model.
