Based on the new MFA 2 platform as the A-Class Limousine, the new GLA looks beefier and more aggressive than its predecessor. Upfront, it features a trapezoidal front grille flanked by angular LED headlamps. They look chunkier than the units seen on the A-Class sedan and reminds us of the units seen on the S-Cross.

On the side, it carries forward the crossover-like silhouette with flared wheel arches like its predecessor. At the back, the new GLA looks taller with a bigger rear windshield, a huger bumper and sleeker tail lamps.

On the inside, the new GLA looks quite similar to the A-Class but features a slightly designed dashboard. The centre of attraction continues to the dual-screen setup for instrumentation and infotainment along with those turbine-like AC vents. Features on offer should include powered front seats, dual-zone AC, a panoramic sunroof, cruise control, LED headlamps and multiple airbags.

Under the hood, the new GLA will be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options: GLA 200 and GLA 220 d. The 220d gets C-Class’ 2.0-litre diesel engine that makes 194PS and 400Nm paired to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. It will also get a 4Matic 4WD system but it will be limited to the top-spec AMG Line variant only. The 200, on the other hand, gets A-Class Limousine’s 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine that makes 163PS and 250Nm mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Mercedes is also expected to launch the top-of-the-line AMG GLA 35 4Matic variant in India. It will be powered by the same 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that powers the recently launched A 35 sedan. It makes 306PS and 400Nm paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and a 4 Matic 4WD system.

As mentioned above, the new GLA is expected to go on sale in May 2021. It will take on likes of the BMW X1, Volvo XC40, Mini Countryman and the yet to be launched second-gen Audi Q3.
