Ashok Leyland was founded in 1948 as Ashok Motors by Raghunandan Saran, an industrialist and entrepreneur. The company initially started as a manufacturer of Austin cars under license from the British automaker Austin Motor Company. Over the years, Ashok Leyland evolved and expanded its portfolio to focus on commercial vehicles, including trucks, buses, and other specialized vehicles.
