Pros & Cons

Advantages
    • 1. Spacious Cabin And Usable Third Row

The Carens offers generous second-row space and a more usable third row than many similarly priced SUVs. This makes it a practical option for families who regularly need more than 5 seats.

    • 2. Practical Seating And Rear-Seat Comfort Features

Split second- and third-row seatbacks provide flexibility for carrying passengers and luggage. Sliding and reclining second-row seats, reclining third-row seats, rear-door sunshades and AC vents for both rear rows improve passenger comfort. The electric tumble function also makes third-row access easier.

    • 3. Comfortable Ride And Light Steering

The suspension handles uneven roads well, helping keep passengers comfortable during family journeys. Light steering also keeps steering effort low in city driving. These characteristics suit the Carens’ role as an everyday family vehicle.

    • 4. Diesel Engine With Good Claimed Fuel Efficiency

The 1.5L diesel produces 250Nm of torque and has a claimed mileage of 21.3kmpl. It gives buyers with higher monthly running a diesel option, which rivals such as the Ertiga and XL6 do not offer.

    • 5. Factory-Fitted CNG Option

The factory-fitted CNG version expands the Carens’ appeal for buyers with higher usage and convenient access to CNG stations. It offers petrol and CNG operation and retains a spare wheel, which is useful for longer journeys.

    • 6. Useful Equipment For The Price

The Premium (O) includes an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a reversing camera and 5 USB-C ports. The Carens CNG costs Rs. 27,000 less than the Clavis HTE CNG while including the touchscreen and camera, which the latter misses.

    Disadvantages
      • 1. Misses Some Everyday Convenience Features

The Premium (O) misses a rear washer-wiper, rear defogger and auto AC. It also gets halogen headlamps instead of LED or projector units. These omissions weaken an otherwise useful convenience package.

      • 2. No Automatic Transmission Or Turbo Petrol Option

All current Carens powertrains come with a 6-speed manual transmission. Buyers seeking clutch-free driving or the stronger turbo petrol engine no longer have either option in the Carens range.

      • 3. Significant Premium For The Diesel Engine

The diesel costs about Rs. 1.9 lakh more than the petrol version of the same Premium (O) variant. Although it offers more torque and better claimed mileage, buyers with limited monthly running may find the additional purchase cost difficult to justify through fuel savings.

      • 4. No Captain Seats Or Higher Variant Options

The Carens comes only in the Premium (O) variant with a 7-seat layout. Buyers who want second-row captain seats cannot choose a 6-seat version. There is also no higher Carens variant offering features such as ventilated front seats, alloy wheels or a sunroof.

      • 5. Small Wheels And MPV Styling May Not Appeal To Everyone

The 15- and 16-inch wheels can look small in relation to the Carens’ overall size. Its MPV proportions may also disappoint buyers who prefer larger wheels and SUV-inspired styling.

      • 6. Lower Claimed Petrol Mileage Than Key Rivals

The Carens petrol-manual has a claimed mileage of 15.7kmpl, compared with the Ertiga petrol-manual’s 20.51kmpl and XL6 petrol-manual’s 20.97kmpl. This puts it at a disadvantage for petrol buyers prioritising fuel efficiency.

      • 7. Modest Adult Occupant Protection Rating

In Global NCAP’s 2024 retest, the Carens scored 3 stars for adult occupant protection and 5 stars for child occupant protection. The adult protection result remains a drawback despite its standard safety equipment.

      Expert Verdict

Price & Value: Carens is more affordable to buy.

Performance & Mileage: 488 delivers better performance with more power and torque, whereas Carens focuses on efficiency and lower running costs.

Space & Comfort: 488 is the longest and widest of the group, which should translate to better cabin space, while Carens offers the highest ground clearance—useful for poor roads and speed breakers. Boot space is largest in 488, making it more practical for luggage.

Features & Safety: Feature-wise, 488 offers the richest equipment list. 488 misses out on some basic safety, functional or convenience features that rivals provide.

Which one should you buy? Choose the Ferrari 488 Spider if your priorities are stronger performance, more cabin space and more boot space. Consider the Kia Carens Premium (O) 7 Seater if you value a lower on-road price and better fuel efficiency. Overall, the Ferrari 488 Spider offers the better balance for buyers who prioritise stronger performance and more cabin space.
