Pros & Cons

Advantages
  • Jeep Compass is the most affordable Jeep SUV in India. Other SUVs like the Rubicon and the Cherokee are far more expensive than the Compass. The Compass’ rivals, Hyundai Tucson and the Citroen C5 Aircross, are the flagship models from their respective brands. However, the Compass is the entry gate to the Jeep brand in India.
  • Jeep Compass comes with a 1.4L turbo petrol engine that puts out 163PS of power and 250Nm of torque. It’s more powerful than Tucson’s 2.0L normal petrol engine which produces 153PS of power and 192Nm of torque. Unlike its rivals, the Compass also offers an option of a 6-speed manual transmission with the turbo petrol engine. The Citroen C5 Aircross, on the other hand, doesn’t even offer a petrol engine option.
  • Jeep offer the Compass with two engine options - 2.0L turbo diesel and 1.4L turbo petrol. Both the engines can either be had with a 6-speed manual transmission or 9-speed torque converter automatic and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic respectively. Other segment rivals do not offer manual transmission options with either of the engines.
  • The base Sport petrol manual variant of the Compass justifies its asking price well. Jeep offer the Compass Sport with turbo petrol manual, turbo petrol automatic and diesel manual at Rs. 17.79 lakh, Rs. 20.37 lakh and Rs. 19.49 Lakh respectively.
  • With the facelift, Jeep India added a host of new features to the Compass. Most of the new features are on offer on the top variant only. Key feature additions include a fully-digital instrument cluster, freestanding touchscreen infotainment with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ventilated front seats, 360-degree parking camera, and powered driver’s seat.
  • The Mahindra Thar comes with a reassuring 4-star adult occupancy safety rating by Global NCAP. The Thar scored 12.52 points out of 17 in adult protection and 41.11 points out of 49 in child protection. Despite having a body-on-frame architecture, the Thar managed to get a stable bodyshell integrity rating from Global NCAP as well.
  • The diesel engine of the Mahindra Thar only commands a premium of Rs. 21,000 to Rs. 31,000 over the corresponding petrol variants. On the performance front, the petrol engine of the Thar produces more power than diesel, at 150PS against the diesel’s 130PS.
  • The 2.0L turbo petrol engine of the Mahindra Thar produces more power and torque than the diesel engine. In addition to that, its petrol engine produces its torque from as low as 1250rpm, giving it an advantage over the diesel engine, which generates its torque from 1600rpm.
  • The Mahindra Thar stands out of the crowd thanks to its traditional SUV design. While the design may remind some of the Jeep Wrangler, it doesn’t fail to turn heads on the road. In addition to that, the Mahindra Thar comes with a diverse range of powertrain options, with 4-wheel-drive standard across all variants. Mahindra offer the Thar with petrol and diesel engine with both manual and automatic transmission options. On the other hand, its arch rival, the Force Gurkha, only gets a diesel-manual powertrain.
  • The Mahindra Thar measures under 4-metres and goes up against the likes of the Kia Sonet and Tata Nexon in terms of price. However, it is wider than the aforementioned sub-4m SUVs. Thanks to the width, the Thar feels very confident while off-road and the wider track certainly helps. The Thar also offers a surprisingly easy ingress to the rear seats for a 2-door SUV.
  • The Thar comes with a good set of features like touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, steering mounted controls, roof-mounted speakers and airbags. All these features do not impede the off road performance of the Thar. It even offers segment-best approach, departure and break-over angles.
Disadvantages
  • Jeep Compass falls in the C-segment category of cars. It’s dimensions are a tad smaller than its rivals, like the Hyundai Tucson and Citroen C5 Aircross. The C5 Aircross offers a ground clearance of 230mm that is much higher than the Compass’ 178mm. Hence, its road presence isn’t as attractive as that of the Tucson or the C5 Aircross.
  • You can get the Compass 4WD only with the diesel automatic powertrain. Similarly, you can only get the automatic with 4WD as Jeep do not offer a diesel automatic option with 2WD. Therefore, to choose any one of the two, you have to compromise with the other one as well. That also increases the cost between the variants by a big margin. The diesel automatic 4WD is dearer by around Rs 4 lakh than the diesel manual option.
  • Jeep do not offer cruise control on variants of the Compass equipped with a manual transmission. That would have made sense if Jeep were offering adaptive cruise control but that’s not the case. You will have to upgrade to either the diesel automatic 4WD or petrol automatic to get the normal cruise control.
  • The Compass does not offer any of its key features in the mid variants. Newly added features like ventilated seats, digital instrument cluster, 360-degree parking camera, LED projector headlamps, and LED fog lamps are only available with the top variant.
  • When Mahindra launched the new-gen Thar, it was already quite expensive over its predecessor. However, soon after the launch, Mahindra removed the 6-seater variants to score the 4-star NCAP safety rating. The removal of the base variants made the starting price of the Thar even more expensive. To make things worse, Mahindra also hiked the prices of the Thar across all variants.
  • Mahindra offer the Thar convertible top with a manually-foldable fabric roof. On the highways, the fabric creates a lot of sound buffeting, which could be irritating over longer distances. We would have liked it if Mahindra had offered a hard-top convertible option.
  • The automatic transmission options in the Mahindra Thar carry a premium of Rs. 1.50 lakh over the corresponding manual transmission variants.
  • While the Mahindra Thar is a true blue off-road vehicle, not every Mahindra Thar owner wants it for its off-road credentials. Many people use the Mahindra Thar for the daily commute and weekend drives. On that front, a 2-wheel-drive drivetrain with a brake-locking-differential would serve the needs of such buyers perfectly. In addition to that, the option of a smaller 1.5L turbo petrol engine will make the Thar a lot more accessible to the masses.

Price & Value: Thar OG is more affordable to buy.

Performance & Mileage: Compass delivers better performance with more power and torque, whereas Compass focuses on efficiency and lower running costs.

Space & Comfort: Compass is the longest and widest of the group, which should translate to better cabin space, while Thar OG offers the highest ground clearance—useful for poor roads and speed breakers. Boot space is largest in Compass, making it more practical for luggage.

Features & Safety: Feature-wise, Thar OG offers the richest equipment list. Compass misses out on some basic safety, functional or convenience features that rivals provide.

Which one should you buy? Choose the Jeep Compass Track Edition if your priorities are stronger performance, better fuel efficiency and more cabin space. Consider the Mahindra Thar OG ZXT if you value a lower on-road price and higher ground clearance. Overall, the Jeep Compass Track Edition offers the better balance for buyers who prioritise stronger performance and better fuel efficiency.
