Pros & Cons

Advantages
  • Mahindra Scorpio N comes with class-leading dimensions and impressive presence on the road. Despite rivaling C-segment 3-row SUVs in terms of price, the Scorpio N is wider and taller than the Toyota Fortuner. Additionally, the Scorpio N is also bigger than the Tata Safari in every dimension.
  • Mahindra Scorpio N is the only SUV with a ladder frame construction in the C and D1 SUVsegment. its arch rival, the 2nd gen Tata Safari, is based on a monocoque chassis while the Toyota Innova Crysta doesn’t fall in the SUV category. Additionally, the Scorpio N is the only SUV in its segment to offer 4-wheel-drive with a low-range gearbox. The Mahindra XUV700 and other C-segment SUVs offer more road-biased all-wheel-drive drivetrains.
  • Mahindra offer the Scorpio N with four powertrain options - 2.0L turbo petrol with manual, 2.0L turbo petrol with automatic, 2.2L turbo diesel with manual and 2.2L turbo diesel with automatic. Additionally, the diesel variants of the Scorpio N carry a premium of Rs. 50,000 over the corresponding petrol variants.
  • Mahindra Scorpio N is the most powerful petrol SUV in C- and D1-segment of SUVs. Its 2.0L turbo petrol engine produces 203PS of power and 370Nm of torque with the 6-speed manual and 380Nm of torque with the 6-speed automatic transmission.
  • Mahindra offer the new Scorpio N 4-wheel-drive with both manual and automatic transmissions. The only other SUV in the segment that offers 4-wheel-drive is the Mahindra XUV700. However, the 4-wheel-drive option in the XUV700 is only available with the automatic transmission.
  • The Innova Hycross comes with a 2.0L strong hybrid powertrain with a claimed fuel efficiency of 21.1kmpl. That efficiency is really impressive for a D1-segment family MPV. The Innova Hycross will offer cost benefits even over the Innova Crysta diesel despite the higher petrol fuel prices.
  • Unlike other cars in its class, the Innova Hycross offers the option of captain seats in all the variants. Even the G-SLF and GX normal petrol variants of the Innovaq Hyross come with both 8- and 7-seater options. The top-spec strong hybrid variants, on the other hand, are only available with the 7-seater option.
  • The Innova Hycross comes packed with features and some of which are segment-best. To name a few, the Innova Hycross offers an electronic tailgate, electronic recline for captain seats, electronically-extendable calf support, panoramic sunroof, front and rear auto climate control, front ventilated seats, JBL sound system, front parking sensors and ADAS.
  • The Innova Hycross comes with a strong road presence and large dimensions. The Hycross measures over 4755mm in length, stepping out of the D1-segment category. Furthermore, Toyota have also added certain SUV-inspired design elements like body cladding, skid plates and muscular bonnet to give it a robust SUV appearance.
  • Toyota are popular for making significantly more reliable and built-to-last cars over their rivals. Their original models like the Fortuner, Innova and Camry have proven their reliability thanks to their built-to-last body and engines. Even though the hybrid powertrain of the Hycross is new in India, Toyota have been engineering hybrid powertrains for over 2 decades now and that induces a lot of confidence in the prospective buyers.
Disadvantages
  • In a typical car launch, the manufacturer commences bookings ahead of the launch and deliveries. In the Scorpio N’s case, Mahindra decided to announce the prices of only the manual 2-wheel-drive variants and announced that bookings would commence from July 30. While this practice creates more hype around the product, it does leave potential buyers in a tough spot as it makes it difficult to select a variant and drivetrain based on their budget.
  • Mahindra do not offer the Scorpio N 6-seater in any of its lower variants. Only the Z8L variant of the Scorpio N offers the option of captain seats. Additionally, the 6-seater variants are only available with 2-wheel-drive manual and automatic variants.
  • The Mahindra Scoprio N comes with a poor segregation of features across all of its variants. For instance, the mid-spec Z6 variant misses out on automatic climate control, LED projector headlamps, side and curtain airbags, chrome grille and tyre pressure monitoring system. Additionally, only the Z8L 4WD AT comes with a wireless phone charger whereas no variant of the diesel manual Scorpio N comes with alloy wheels, save for Z8L.
  • With all that power and weight of the body-on-frame Mahindra Scorpio N, we expect it to deliver poor fuel efficiency. Mahindra have not revealed the fuel efficiency of any of the Scorpio N’s variants and we expect them to stand below segment standards.
  • Unlike the Thar, the Mahindra Scorpio N misses out on the 4-wheel-drive option with the turbo petrol engine. Additionally, Mahindra neither offer a locking rear differential with the Scorpio N nor the multi-drive modes, which the Scorpio N diesel offers.
  • Toyota Innova Hycross comes with a 2.0L normal petrol and 2.0L strong hybrid petrol engine options. While the strong hybrid comes with an e-CVT transmission, the normal petrol engine comes with a CVT transmission. Toyota do not offer any diesel option or a petrol manual option with the Innova Hycross.
  • While Toyota announced the fuel efficiency figures of the Innova Hycross strong hybrid, the Japanese carmaker didn’t reveal the claimed fuel efficiency of the normal petrol engine. The fuel efficiency of the normal petrol engine could be something that could disappoint prospective buyers. Those who are with a strict budget may have to move to the Innova Crysta diesel for better fuel efficiency over the Innova Hycross normal petrol.
  • The Innova Hycross has left its genes in the past and moved to a lighter monocoque chassis and front-wheel-drive setup. While it has helped Hycross shed 200kg over the Crysta , it may not appeal to cult followers of the Qualis, Innova and Crysta, all of which offered a rugged body-on-frame chassis and rear-wheel-drive setup. However, it’s worth noting that the Crysta will remain on sale to cater to such a crowd.
  • Auto emergency braking is a feature that comes bundled with most of ADAS-equipped cars in the market. However, the Innova Hycross doesn’t offer auto emergency braking. We would have liked it if Toyota had offered a switchable option for the auto emergency braking system.

Expert Verdict

Price & Value: Innova Hycross is more affordable to buy.

Performance & Mileage: Scorpio-N delivers better performance with more power and torque, whereas Innova Hycross focuses on efficiency and lower running costs.

Space & Comfort: Innova Hycross is the longest and widest of the group, which should translate to better cabin space, while Scorpio-N offers the highest ground clearance—useful for poor roads and speed breakers. Boot space is largest in Scorpio-N, making it more practical for luggage.

Features & Safety: Feature-wise, Innova Hycross offers the richest equipment list. Scorpio-N misses out on some basic safety, functional or convenience features that rivals provide.

Which one should you buy? Choose the Mahindra Scorpio-N Z8L 4WD 7 Seater if your priorities are more boot space and higher ground clearance. Consider the Toyota Innova Hycross GX(O) 7S if you value a lower on-road price, better fuel efficiency and more cabin space. Overall, the Toyota Innova Hycross GX(O) 7S offers the better balance for buyers who prioritise a lower on-road price and better fuel efficiency.
