In this article, we share the V3Cars real-world mileage test results of the Toyota Fortuner 2.8L turbo diesel automatic. We also compare the city and highway mileage with the claimed figure, calculate the full tank range and fuel cost, and explain the expected mileage difference between Fortuner manual, automatic, 4x2 and 4WD variants.

Last Updated: July 2026
The Toyota Fortuner 2.8L diesel automatic delivered 11.21kmpl in the city and 15.29kmpl on the highway in the V3Cars real-world mileage test.
These numbers are for the Fortuner 2.8L turbo diesel 2WD with the 6-speed torque converter automatic (TC) transmission. The test car was driven in Delhi NCR city traffic and on the highway at around 100kmph. For current Fortuner prices, variants and features, visit the Toyota Fortuner model page on V3Cars.
The table below gives you the direct mileage, range and fuel cost answers before we explain the test in detail:
Note: Fuel cost is calculated using the Gurgaon diesel price as of July 2026. For your city, use the V3Cars fuel prices in India tool.
For the mileage test, we used the tank-full-to-tank-full method.
We filled the Fortuner’s tank to the brim, reset the trip metre and drove the SUV through our usual city route in Delhi NCR traffic. After completing the city run, we refilled the tank and calculated the city mileage.
Then, we reset the trip metre again and drove the Fortuner on the highway. The highway test was done around the Sohna section of the Delhi-Mumbai expressway at around 100kmph.
This method helps us calculate real fuel consumed over a known distance, instead of relying only on the MID mileage reading.
In the city mileage test, the Toyota Fortuner 2.8L diesel automatic 2WD covered 102km in around 4 hours and 40 minutes. The average speed was 22kmph, which represents slow-moving city traffic well.
After the city run, the Fortuner took 9.09L of diesel. Based on the distance covered and fuel consumed, the Fortuner diesel automatic delivered 11.21kmpl in the city.
At the current Gurgaon diesel price of Rs. 95.64 per litre, the Fortuner diesel automatic’s city running cost works out to about Rs. 8.53 per kilometre.
For the highway mileage test, we drove the Fortuner diesel automatic at around 100kmph. The SUV covered 125km in about 1 hour and 45 minutes, with an average speed of 72kmph.
After the highway run, the Fortuner took 8.2L of diesel. This gives the Fortuner 2.8L diesel automatic a real-world highway mileage of 15.29kmpl.
At the current Gurgaon diesel price of Rs. 95.64 per litre, the highway running cost works out to about Rs. 6.26 per kilometre.
The Fortuner diesel automatic has a claimed mileage of 14.4kmpl. In our city test, the Fortuner returned 11.21kmpl, which is about 22 percent lower than the claimed figure. On the highway, it delivered 15.29kmpl, which is about 6 percent higher than the claim.
The Fortuner’s highway mileage is impressive for a large diesel SUV. However, the city mileage drops because of its weight, engine size, and automatic transmission when driven in slow traffic conditions.
V3Cars has tested the Fortuner diesel automatic. However, the current claimed mileage figures also help us understand the difference between the Fortuner diesel manual and automatic variants.
On paper, the 4x2 diesel manual has the highest claimed mileage. The 4x2 diesel automatic is only 0.2kmpl lower. In the real world, the manual may do better with a relaxed driver, while the automatic can deliver more consistent mileage in traffic because it reduces clutch and gearshift effort.
The Fortuner 4WD variants will deliver slightly lower mileage than the 2WD variants. That is because the 4WD hardware adds weight and mechanical drag.
Based on the claimed figures, the 2WD diesel manual is rated at 14.6kmpl, while the 4WD diesel manual is rated at 14.2kmpl. This is a difference of 0.4kmpl. For automatic variants, the 2WD diesel automatic is rated at 14.4kmpl, while the 4WD diesel automatic variants are around 14.2kmpl.
If most of your driving is on highways or within the city, the 4x2 diesel automatic should be more efficient. The 4WD variant makes more sense if you regularly drive on rough roads, slush, sand, snow or need to go off-road.
The Toyota Fortuner has an 80L fuel tank. Based on our tested mileage figures, a full tank can theoretically deliver about 897km in the city and 1223km on the highway.
*For a more realistic estimate, we have calculated the usable range with 90 percent of the tank capacity. This leaves 10 percent fuel in reserve.
For a 70 percent city and 30 percent highway usage, expect around 12.19kmpl and a usable full tank range of about 877km. For a 50-50 city-highway usage, expect around 12.94kmpl and a usable range of about 931km.
At Rs. 95.64 per litre, filling 90 percent of the Fortuner’s 80L tank will cost about Rs. 6886. A complete 80L fill will cost about Rs. 7651.
The Toyota Fortuner diesel automatic should deliver around 11kmpl in city traffic and 15kmpl on the highway if your driving conditions are close to our test cycle. For mixed usage, a realistic Fortuner average will usually sit between 12kmpl and 14kmpl.
The 4x2 diesel automatic is the better pick if you want the convenience of an automatic with slightly better efficiency. The 4x4 variants are more useful for rough-road driving, but they will use more fuel than the 4x2 variants.

The Toyota Fortuner 2.8L diesel automatic delivered 11.21kmpl in the city and 15.29kmpl on the highway in the V3Cars real-world mileage test.
The Fortuner diesel automatic average depends on city-highway usage. Expect 11.21kmpl in city traffic, 15.29kmpl on the highway and about 12.94kmpl for a 50-50 city-highway usage.
With an 80L fuel tank, the Fortuner diesel automatic can theoretically deliver about 897km in the city and 1223km on the highway. With 10 percent fuel kept in reserve, the usable range is about 807km to 1101km.
Yes, based on claimed mileage, the Fortuner 4x2 diesel manual is slightly more efficient. It has a claimed mileage of 14.6kmpl, while the 4x2 diesel automatic has a claimed mileage of 14.4kmpl.
The Fortuner 4WD diesel variants have a claimed mileage of around 14.2kmpl. In real-world use, expect lower mileage than comparable 4x2 variants because of the extra 4WD hardware and weight.
At a diesel price of Rs. 95.64 per litre, the Fortuner diesel automatic costs about Rs. 8.53/km in the city and Rs. 6.26/km on the highway.
