Volkswagen Unveils ID.Polo – A Nostalgic Name Goes Electric | V3Cars
Few hatchbacks in India have commanded the kind of cult following that the Volkswagen Polo did. From its launch in 2010 until its discontinuation in 2022, the Polo became synonymous with driving pleasure, timeless design, and German solidity in a compact package. Even today, enthusiasts across the country fondly remember it as one of the most engaging hatchbacks in its class.

Now, that cherished nameplate is stepping into a new era. At the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich, Volkswagen officially unveiled the ID.Polo – an all-electric hatchback that reimagines the Polo for the EV age. Joining it on stage was the ID.Polo GTI, a sportier iteration that promises to carry forward the performance heritage of the GTI badge.
VW ID.Polo: A New Beginning For A Familiar Name
The ID.Polo is based on Volkswagen’s MEB Entry platform, the same underpinnings that supported the ID.2all concept. Unlike previous Polos, which were powered by petrol and diesel engines, the ID.Polo will feature an electric motor mounted on the front axle. While final specifications are yet to be revealed, the ID.2all concept offers some clues – 223PS of power, 0–100kmph in under 7 seconds, and a range of up to 450km (WLTP).
The GTI version, which is expected to debut alongside, is likely to get more power and sharper dynamics, reviving memories of the fun-to-drive Polo GT TSI that once captured the imagination of Indian petrolheads.
Global Launch Timeline
The Volkswagen ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI will go on sale globally in 2026, with production specifications revealed closer to launch.
Polo’s Legacy In India
For Indian enthusiasts, the unveiling of the ID.Polo is more than just another EV launch. It’s a reminder of the car that introduced many to the joys of spirited yet refined driving. The Polo may no longer be on sale in India, but its reputation continues to live on in enthusiast circles and pre-owned markets.
The Polo name may have gone missing from Indian showrooms, but it clearly hasn’t faded from memory. With the ID.Polo, Volkswagen are breathing new life into a beloved nameplate, carrying its legacy into the electric future. For Indian fans, the wait now is not just for specs and prices, but for the answer to a single burning question: will the Polo make a comeback on Indian roads, this time as an EV?
