Maruti Suzuki Gujarat Rail Plant World-First Modal Shift Credit Project (Press Release) | V3Cars

Here’s what Maruti Suzuki India Limited have to say about the carbon credit milestone:

Maruti Suzuki India Limited announced that its Gujarat in-plant railway siding has been registered as the world’s first Modal Shift Transportation Project under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) program of Verra, setting a global benchmark in sustainable logistics. The project is expected to generate approximately 1.7 lakh carbon credits over a 10-year crediting period from FY 2023–24 to FY 2032–33 by shifting vehicle dispatches from road to rail, a more efficient and sustainable mode of transport.

The emission reductions have been quantified under the AM0090 methodology prescribed under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Following independent verification of carbon emission savings, Verra will issue 1.7 lakh carbon credits to Maruti Suzuki under its VCS program.

Commenting on the milestone, Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said:

This milestone marks a significant step forward in our sustainability journey and reinforces our commitment to setting industry benchmarks that align with India’s strong steps towards net zero emissions.”

The project also contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and Climate Action (SDG 13).
