Top 7 Safest Diesel Cars In India - GNCAP Tested

Thanks to stricter emissions regulations, only a handful of manufacturers have a diesel engine in their portfolio, if at all. So, you have limited choices. That’s part of the reason why the Kia Seltos is on this list.

Top 7 Safest Diesel Cars In India

Note: The adult safety score is out of 17 while the child safety score is out of 49. GNCAP condenses the score into a star rating for easy understanding. To maintain consistency, this list only includes made-in-India cars tested by Global NCAP.

1. Mahindra XUV300

XUV300

The Mahindra XUV300’s diesel engine makes the most torque for a 1.5-litre engine - 300Nm. Needless to say, it has the best torque in the segment but then, this is a heavy car and it needs all of that torque to move around. A good chunk of that weight comes from the crumble zones to keep the cabin safe. They didn’t skimp on metal.

That’s probably why the XUV300 got the best-ever safety score for any made-in-India car. It has 16.42 points out of 17 for adult safety and 37.44 out of 49 for child safety. The XUV300 got a 5-star safety rating for adults and a 4-star rating for child occupants.

Note that these scores are for the 2-airbag version of the car. If you buy the higher variants with additional airbags, they’ll offer even better real-world safety.

3. Tata Nexon

Nexon

The Tata Nexon managed to score 16.06 points out of 17 for adult safety and 25 out of 49 for child safety. Tata Nexon’s combined score for adult and child safety is 5 stars and 3 stars.

The Nexon is more expensive than the Altroz but that’s the price you pay for a bigger car with SUV styling. Despite offering the same 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine as the Altroz, the Nexon makes more power and torque. It also gets a 6-speed transmission and there’s the option of AMT automatic with most of its variants.

4. Mahindra Marazzo

Mahindra Marazzo

The Mahindra Marazzo’s ladder frame construction makes it as abuse-friendly as the Scorpio, Innova and Fortuner. Meanwhile, a front-wheel drivetrain gets rid of the transmission tunning and makes some room in the cabin. It’s also more efficient than a rear-wheel-drive layout as it limits transmission losses.

In the GNCAP test, the Marazzo scored 12.85 points for adult safety out of 17 and 22.2 points for child safety. Its overall safety rating stands at 4 stars for adults and 2 for kids.

6. Ford Figo, Aspire & Freestyle

Ford Figo

The Ford Aspire got 10.49 for adult safety and 14.22 for child safety. The final score stands at 3 stars for grown-ups and 2 stars for kids. Note that this result is for the 2-airbag model. If you grab the top-spec 6-airbag variant, then your car will have a much better real-world safety rating, especially for side impacts and rollovers.

Figo and Freestyle also share the platform with the Aspire. From a crash perspective, their frames remain identical. Therefore, these numbers apply to these two cars as well.

7. Kia Seltos

Kia Seltos

The Kia Seltos became an overnight success but it has barely enough points to make it onto this list. That’s because most cars that scored better don’t have a diesel engine option.

The Seltos scored well under 10 points as it managed to walk away with 8.03 points for adult safety and 15 points for child safety. The final tally stands at 3 stars and 2 stars for adult and child protection, respectively.
