Auto Expo 2025: OG Tata Sierra Diesel Showcased | V3Cars

At the 2025 Mobility Expo, Tata Motors brought back the old diesel Sierra. The OG. The one and only. The one with 2 doors along the sides and another side-swinging one around the back. The one with 4WD. The one with a rugged, body-on-frame chassis/platform. The one with a diesel engine. The one with an actual curved rear glass window. The one with the spare mounted on the rear door.

In the name of modernisation, you may look at the flashy yellow Tata Sierra and call it an improvement over the older one. But if they’re banking on the Sierra’s name and personality to sell the new car, then it ought to respect the old one’s soul and bring back as many of the features of the old as possible. But the new Sierra is a completely new car not deserving of the Sierra’s name. And how much of a difference there is, Tata just parked the two cars next to one another.

The new Sierra 2025 standing next to the original Sierra has:

  • No side-swinging boot door but a hatchback
  • No spare wheel mounted around the back
  • 4-doors instead of 2-doors, as the original Sierra
  • No 4WD option
  • A monocoque platform instead of a rugged body-on-frame
  • A 1.5L turbo petrol engine (the display car had a petrol engine)
  • No curved rear window glass

Someone might defend the new Sierra by saying that Maruti Suzuki did the same thing. They brought back the Baleno badge in a hatchback form while the old one was a sedan. But, Maruti Suzuki didn’t use references to the old Baleno when promoting the new Baleno. They just wanted to capitalise on the brand recognition. Not nostalgia.

Either way, it’s fun to watch the 2 Sierras next to one another and see in person how much the new Sierra is different from the old one while still wearing the Sierra badge.
