Global NCAP tested the Honda Amaze under its #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. The Honda Amaze’s 4-star adult and 1-star child occupant protection ratings were reduced to a 2-star for adult occupant protection and 0 stars for child occupant protection as the tests were conducted using Global NCAP’s latest test protocols.

In an interesting move, the Honda Amaze that was tested by the Global NCAP wasn’t the updated model that was introduced in India recently. The Honda Amaze was recently updated with seatbelt reminders for all 5 passengers as standard. However, the updated Amaze continues to feature 2 airbags while Honda’s other models like the City and Elevate now get 6 airbags across all variants. If Global NCAP had tested the updated model, we believe the Amaze could have achieved better scores. Nonetheless, the current and more stringent test protocols resulted in a 2-star safety rating for adults and 0 stars for child occupant protection.

According to Global NCAP, child protection showed head contact in the frontal impact for both dummies, high loadings in the chest and neck of the 3-year-old child and ejection risk in the 1.5-year-old dummies. The lack of 3-point seatbelts for all 5 passengers and passenger airbags disconnection switch as well as the failure of some CRSs in installation explain the zero stars for child occupant protection.

In the frontal impact test, the 2024 Amaze offered good protection to the driver’s and front passenger’s head and neck. The driver’s and passenger’s chest showed adequate protection. Driver’s and passenger’s knees showed marginal protection. Driver’s and passenger’s tibias showed good protection. The footwell area and bodyshell were rated stable. In the side impact test, the head and pelvis showed good protection, chest showed marginal protection and abdomen showed adequate protection. Side pole impact: not performed as there is no availability of side head protection even as optional. ESC not available. SBR is standard for the front driver seat. All this explained the 2 star for adult occupant protection.

In an official statement, Honda India said, “The South Africa-spec 2ng Generation Amaze has already been tested as 4 star by GNCAP in 2019. The latest test basis new protocols shows that the total score is of 5-star level. However, mainly due to requirement of certain equipment like Electronic Stability Control and Side Curtain Airbags, it resulted in lower rating.”
The Honda Amaze is set to receive a generation change later this year and we expect it to come packed with more safety features, including standard 6 airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, and more.
