Maruti Suzuki have quietly removed the Ignis hatchback from the Nexa website, signalling the discontinuation of the SUV-inspired hatchback. Production has ended, bookings are now closed and the remaining inventory at Nexa dealerships represents the final batch of Ignis models available for sale. The 2026 Ignis was priced between Rs. 5.35 lakh and Rs. 7.42 lakh (ex-showroom).

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Discontinued In India – Why It Was Inevitable

Launched in 2017, the Ignis stood out from conventional hatchbacks with its boxy design, SUV-inspired stance and quirky styling. However, after nearly 9 years on sale, the Ignis exits the market without a direct replacement.

Maruti Ignis Sales Declined Despite A Strong Start

When the Ignis launched through Maruti Suzuki's Nexa retail network in January 2017, it attracted buyers looking for something different from the usual premium hatchbacks. The Ignis sold over 48,000 units in its first full year on sale. However, sales gradually declined as the segment evolved and buyer preferences shifted towards compact SUVs.

The facelift introduced in 2020 helped revive demand temporarily, with annual sales crossing 51,000 units in 2022. However, the momentum proved short-lived. As newer rivals entered the market, annual sales steadily declined, eventually dropping below 2,000 units per month in its final year.

Lack Of Updates Hurt The Ignis

One of the biggest reasons behind the Ignis' decline was the lack of meaningful updates. Over its entire lifecycle, the Ignis received only one major facelift. Meanwhile, competitors continued to introduce new features, improved safety equipment and alternative fuel options.

Some key shortcomings of the Ignis towards the end of its lifecycle included:

  • No factory-fitted CNG option
  • Only 2 airbags while rivals offered 6 as standard
  • No major feature upgrades in recent years
  • Limited powertrain choices

While Maruti Suzuki upgraded most of its portfolio to comply with changing customer expectations and safety standards, the Ignis remained largely unchanged.

Compact SUVs Changed The Market

The biggest challenge for the Ignis was the rapid rise of compact SUVs. Models such as the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter offered SUV-inspired styling, higher ground clearance, better safety credentials, modern features and competitive pricing. These vehicles appealed to the same buyers who may have previously considered the Ignis.

Even within Maruti Suzuki's own lineup, the Ignis faced competition from models such as the Swift, Fronx, WagonR and Celerio, making its position increasingly difficult to justify.

What's Next For Maruti Suzuki?

Maruti Suzuki are reportedly working on a new sub-4m SUV, internally codenamed Y43, which is expected to rival the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter.

Unlike the Ignis, which combined hatchback and crossover traits, the upcoming Y43 is expected to offer a more traditional SUV design and positioning. The new model could arrive in 2026 and help Maruti strengthen its presence in one of India's fastest-growing vehicle segments.

For now, the Ignis bows out as one of the most distinctive Maruti Suzuki models of the last decade. A car that was ahead of its time in some ways, but ultimately left behind by a market that increasingly favours SUVs over hatchbacks.
