Maruti Suzuki have officially discontinued the Ciaz, bringing an end to one of India's most successful C-segment sedans. Production has ceased and dealer inventory represents the final batch of Ciaz units available for sale. The 2026 Ciaz was priced between Rs. 9.09 lakh and Rs. 11.89 lakh (ex-showroom).

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Discontinued In India – End Of An Era For Sedans

Launched in 2014 as the replacement for the SX4, the Ciaz quickly established itself as a strong contender in the C-segment sedan space. Thanks to its spacious cabin, fuel-efficient engines and value-for-money proposition, the Ciaz went on to become India's best-selling sedan on multiple occasions.

However, after more than a decade on sale, the Ciaz exits the market without a direct successor.

The Ciaz Was Once The Segment Leader

At a time when midsize sedans represented one of India's most competitive car segments, the Ciaz stood out by offering exceptional rear-seat space and ownership value.

It regularly outsold rivals such as the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Volkswagen Vento during its peak years. For many buyers, the Ciaz delivered everything they wanted from a family sedan without stretching their budget.

However, the market that helped the Ciaz succeed gradually began disappearing. As customer preferences shifted towards SUVs, sedan sales across the industry declined sharply. The Ciaz was among the hardest hit.

Maruti Suzuki Stopped Investing In The Ciaz

One of the key reasons for the Ciaz's decline was the lack of substantial updates. While rivals received multiple generations, major design changes, turbo-petrol engines, ADAS features and stronger safety packages, the Ciaz remained largely unchanged.

Its final years on sale highlighted several shortcomings:

  • Ageing platform
  • No turbo-petrol engine option
  • No sunroof
  • No ADAS features
  • Smaller infotainment screen than rivals
  • Limited safety upgrades

The 2018 facelift helped keep the Ciaz relevant for a few years, but the sedan never received a full-generation change despite remaining on sale for over a decade.

As competitors evolved, the Ciaz gradually lost its appeal among buyers looking for modern technology and performance.

SUVs Changed The Rules

The biggest reason behind the Ciaz's discontinuation is simple: buyers stopped buying sedans. The rise of SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder dramatically changed the market.

For a similar budget, buyers could get higher ground clearance, easier ingress and egress, more road presence, SUV styling and fuel-efficient diesel engine options.

As SUV sales exploded, midsize sedans became increasingly difficult to justify for mainstream buyers. The entire segment contracted, and the Ciaz was unable to escape the trend.

What Comes Next?

The discontinuation of the Ciaz leaves Maruti Suzuki without a sedan in the C-segment. More importantly, it marks the end of an era for mainstream family sedans in India. Unlike previous decades when sedans symbolised an upgrade from hatchbacks, today's buyers increasingly aspire to own SUVs.

The Ciaz didn't fail because it was a bad car. In fact, it remained one of the most comfortable and practical sedans in its class until the very end. Its real problem was that the market moved away from sedans faster than Maruti Suzuki could justify investing in a replacement.

With the Ciaz gone and the Ignis recently discontinued, Maruti Suzuki's future strategy appears increasingly focused on SUVs, crossovers and electrification – segments where customer demand continues to grow.
