At the launch of the Exter, Hyundai India’s chief operating officer, Tarun Garg, officially ruled out the possibility of a turbo petrol engine to power the Exter. Read on to know why Hyundai do not find the turbo petrol engine feasible for the Exter SUV.

Hyundai India officially confirmed that turbo petrol engines will remain exclusive to models up and above the Venue. Models like the Grand i10 Nios hatchback, Aura sedan and Exter small SUV will not get a turbo petrol engine. Mr. Tarun further explained that a majority of small car buyers put efficiency and value as their primary priorities over performance.

The carmaker offered a 1.0L turbo petrol engine for a brief time with the Grand i10 Nios hatchback and Aura sedan. However, the turbo petrol variants of both the models didn’t receive a good response from the market and with the launch of the respective models’ facelifts, Hyundai discontinued the turbo petrol engine from their lineup. Currently, only cars like the i20 hatchback and Venue B2-SUV and above offer turbo petrol engine options in the brand’s portfolio.
Hyundai offer the Exter with 2 powertrain options — 1.2L normal petrol and 1.2L petrol-CNG. Take a look at the power and torque figures of both the engine options.

The Hyundai Exter goes up against the likes of the Tata Punch and its starting price also matches that of the Punch. However, it is worth mentioning that the aforementioned prices are introductory and are bound to change in the near future.
