So let’s take a closer look at the rumoured upcoming MPV.

Toyota Rumion MPV Likely To Launch In Q3 2023

Buoyed by the success of the Glanza and the Urban Cruiser before it, Toyota are likely to soon launch another product based on a Maruti Suzuki vehicle. This time around, it is likely to be the Rumion MPV, which is based on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Toyota already offer the Rumion in a few global markets such as South Africa, where it was launched in late-2021. Ever since Toyota set foot in India, they have enjoyed their fair share of success in the Indian MPV segment, first with the Qualis followed by the Innova, Innova Crysta and now the Innova Hycross.

However, Toyota currently do not have any MPVs in the sub-Rs. 20 lakh price range save for the base variant of the Innova Crysta. Hence, it makes sense for Toyota to launch the Rumion MPV based on the Ertiga with a price tag ranging from Rs. 9 lakh to Rs. 13.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Currently, Maruti Suzuki manufactures the Toyota Rumion for export markets while Toyota build the Maruti Nexa Grand Vitara and Invicto for the domestic market. Hence, we can expect Maruti Suzuki to undertake the production of the Rumion for the domestic market as well. And since the Rumion is already on sale in South Africa, we have an inkling on what the India-spec Rumion could look like. So let’s take a look.

Toyota Rumion Design, Engine And Transmission Options

Like most products shared between Maruti Suzuki and Toyota under their global partnership, the Rumion will be nothing but a rebadged version of the Ertiga. In South Africa, the Rumion features a different grille and alloy wheel designs and Toyota logos to set it apart from the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Apart from an all-black interior for the Rumion over the Ertiga, both MPVs share the same cabin layout and features as well. However, the India-spec Rumion is likely to feature the same beige interior as the Ertiga for ease of manufacturing.

As far as engine and transmission options are concerned, the India-spec Toyota Rumion is expected to retain the Ertiga’s 1.5L normal petrol engine with mild hybrid technology. The Maruti engine produces 103PS of power and 137Nm of torque and comes with the option of a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Some reports suggest Toyota could even offer the CNG bi-fuel option that’s available in the Ertiga. However, Toyota are unlikely to offer this option at launch and could introduce it at a later stage.

Toyota Rumion Price And Rivals

As with other products shared between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, the rebadged version said vehicle is likely to be priced at a marginal premium over the vehicle it is based on. In this case, Toyota are likely to charge a small premium for the Rumion over the Maruti Ertiga. Currently, the Ertiga is priced between Rs. 8.64 lakh and Rs. 13.08 lakh (ex-showroom). So we can expect the Rumion prices to range from Rs. 9 lakh to Rs. 13.50 lakh (ex-showroom) when it goes on sale in September.
