Should You Buy Kia Sonet Turbo Petrol Or Diesel?

The price difference between the Sonet turbo petrol-manual and turbo diesel-manual variants ranges between Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 75,000. So, the HTK plus manual buyer can recover the higher upfront cost in just over 40,000km. At a tad under 35,000km, the break even figure is much lower for the more expensive diesel manual variants such as HTX Plus manual and GTX plus manual.

For the diesel-automatic buyer, the km-to-breakeven figure is over 1.30 lakh kilometre. This stark difference is because of the torque converter automatic of the diesel engine. It’s quite inefficient but a tried and tested piece of technology. The turbo petrol’s quick-shifting and efficient dual-clutch automatic is a new-age technology that is yet to prove itself as a reliable long-term partner. So, if you value reliability more than efficiency and see yourself covering more than 1 lakh kilometre during the ownership, then the Sonet diesel automatic is a good choice.

The 2 major advantages of the Sonet turbo petrol are:

  • Sub-1.0L displacement makes insurance slightly cheaper
  • ACMT (Auto-Clutch Manual Transmission), or iMT in Kia-speak, makes it almost as easy to drive in traffic as an automatic

If not for these 2 reasons, the Sonet diesel would’ve been an easy recommendation over the Sonet turbo petrol.

Totally consfused on which to buy between Sonet GTX plus diesel automatic vs Sonet GTX plus petrol iMT. My driving on an average is around 20-30 kms per day. And if i buy the petrol engine, will it have degrading mileage over the years with iMT? I want to buy diesel but its waiting is quite longer and a bit more in price than petrol. Please suggest and help me Prathu.
