South Korean carmaker Kia Motors will be entering the Indian auto market with the Seltos compact SUV on 22 August 2019. The carmaker is accepting bookings for the Seltos and the car is now available for prospective buyers to see in the flesh in Kia dealerships in 160 cities.
Going forward, Kia plans to introduce a new car in India in every six months. The second car after the Seltos will be the Carnival MPV. It will be followed by another SUV, a sub-compact one to rival the likes of the Mahindra XUV300 & Hyundai Venue.
The carmaker has plans to pump its portfolio with more SUVs/MPVs after its third car in India, which should launch by the end of 2020.
While the fourth product is still unknown, it is not going to be a hatchback or a sedan. In the SUV space, Kia is clear that it doesn’t plan to go up to the Telluride in its portfolio in India as of now.
The third SUV could then be either a model positioned above the Seltos in the mid-size SUV space to rival the likes of the Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Compass, or an even larger SUV, in the Hyundai SantaFe space.
While Hyundai and Kia are rumoured to be developing a new small crossover based on the Grand i10 platform in S. Korea, the carmaker doesn’t have any plans to introduce it in India anytime soon.
