    Renault 2019 Kwid

    Renault Kwid - Strengths

    • It’s a looker; updated styling with headlamps down in the bumper gives it a stronger road presence
    • No variant of the Renault Kwid looks like a cheaper variant; all of them get body-coloured bumpers, LED DRLs, double-barrel headlamps, wheel arch cladding and 165-section 14-inch wheels
    • Spacious cabin boot for its class
    • A fat list of features like LED DRLs, double-barrel headlamps, rear armrest, wheel arch and door cladding, touchscreen, reversing camera, all 4 power windows, etc.
    • 2 petrol engines to choose from (0.8-litre and 1.0-litre) with the 1.0-litre priced attractively
    • A very well-priced AMT automatic available with the 1.0-litre engine variants
    • Sorted suspension offers a comfy ride - for an entry-level hatchback
    • Best in class ground clearance of 184mm

    Renault Kwid – Weaknesses

    • Engine is not as refined as Maruti’s and is a little low on bottom-end performance
    • No manual gear selection available with AMT automatic variants
    • Renault’s after sales service reach is no match for Maruti Suzuki’s

Renault Kwid - India Launch Date

The 2019 Renault Kwid facelift launched on October 1, 2019. Its chief rival, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, launched a day before on September 30, 2019.

    Renault Kwid - Price Range

The 2019 updated Renault Kwid is priced between Rs. 2.83 lakh and Rs. 4.92 lakh (prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

    Renault Kwid - Variants

The Renault Kwid is available in five variants, namely - Standard, RXE, RXL, RXT and Climber edition. The 1.0-litre engine is only available with the RXT and Climber variants while the smaller engine is limited to STD, RXE, RXL and RXT variants. There’s a 5-speed AMT automatic and optional features available with the 1.0-litre RXT and Climber variants.

Renault Kwid - Engine and Transmission

The 2019 Renault Kwid is available with 2 petrol engine options - 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre. The smaller, 0.8-litre engine makes 54PS of power at 5678rpm and 72Nm of torque at 4386rpm. The larger 1.0-litre petrol engine makes 68PS of power at 5500rpm and 91Nm of torque at 4250rpm.

Both the engines are available with a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1.0-ltire engine is also available with a 5-speed AMT automatic.

    Renault Kwid - Fuel Efficiency

The Kwid’s 0.8-litre petrol engine delivers a claimed fuel efficiency of 22.7kmpl. The bigger 1.0-litre petrol engine offers a claimed fuel economy of 21.7kmpl with the manual transmission, and 23.1kmpl with the AMT.

    Renault Kwid Features - Hits

Its features list includes an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster with tachometer and multi-info display, LED DRLs, front and rear power windows and a rear seat armrest.

On the safety front, the top variant - Climber (O) - of the new Renault Kwid comes equipped with front dual airbags, ABS, front seatbelt reminder, reverse parking camera, remote central locking system.

    Renault Kwid Features - Misses

The 2019 Renault Kwid facelift is so loaded to the brim with features, that it’s difficult to even nitpick with this micro SUV. But, we’ll do it anyway!

The implementation of the AMT automatic is very futuristic as it doesn’t expect you to worry about the gears at all. There are just 3 modes R for reverse, D for driving forward and N for neutral. While it works fine most of the time for most of the car owners, it’s possible that you could someday end up in a situation where you might wish it had a manual override. All other cars with an AMT automatic have manual gear selection - except the Kwid. Even the Renault’s own Duster diesel AMT has an option to manually pick a gear.

The other nice to have feature would be a front centre armrest. There’s already one for the rear seat occupants in the Climber variant. At least the automatic variants should get one since there’s not much to keep your left hand busy while driving the automatic Kwid.

Who Should Buy the Renault Kwid?

The 2019 Renault Kwid facelift has a lot to offer in a small package that’s also priced attractively compared to its competition. If you are a first-time car buyer and want a stylish, feature-loaded first car, then the 2019 Renault Kwid should fit the bill just fine.

If you already have a bigger car at home and want a second car as a backup or for shorter runs, then the Kwid will meet your needs too. The smaller Kwid automatic can also deal with the urban jungle and overcome tall speed breakers with its best-in-class 184mm ground clearance.

You should consider the Renault Kwid if you want to stand out and believe that the Maruti Suzuki cars are too popular for their own good.

If you want a stylish small car and are on a shoestring budget, then the Renault Kwid facelift is perfect. Even the base STD variant, which doesn’t get AC and power steering, appears quite stylish from the outside. That’s because all variants of the new 2019 Kwid facelift get body-coloured bumpers, double-barrel headlamps, LED daytime running lights, wheel arch cladding and large 14-inch wheels.

If you look for value in a car, then look no further. The new Kwid is the most value-for-money car this side of Rs. 5.0 lakh (ex-showroom).

    Renault Kwid - Background

The Renault Kwid’s concept model was first unveiled at the 2014 Auto Expo in India, while the production version was unveiled in May 2015; about 4 months prior to its September 2015 launch.

The Renault Kwid was aimed square at disturbing Maruti Suzuki’s dominance in the entry-level hatchback space. Other cars have tried and failed to shake Maruti Suzuki. The Renault Kwid succeeded at it by offering a lot of value for the price with better style, space and features compared to the Alto twins. It’s truer with the 2019 facelift. The Kwid is a big reason why the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso exists and why Hyundai is considering entering this “micro-SUV” sub-segment.

    Renault Kwid - Milestones

Renault Kwid has crossed the 3 lakh sales milestone in India in June 2019, since its first launched back in 2015.

    Renault Kwid - Competition

The Renault Kwid goes up against the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and Alto K10. The Kwid’s lesser rival Datsun Redi Go comes from Renault’s Japanese ally Nissan. However, currently the Kwid’s direct rival is the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, owing to its micro-SUV appeal.

    Renault Kwid - Future

The Renault Kwid competes with the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, which launched with BS6 engines. The Kwid still comes with BS4 engines and it’ll get BS6-compliant engines in the coming months as we get closer to the April 2020 deadline. The BS6 Renault Kwid is expected to be a little more expensive compared to the BS4 version.

A modified version of the Renault Kwid’s CMF-A platform is also used to make the very spacious Triber sub-4m 7-seater MPV. The same platform could also underpin the upcoming 2020 Renault HBC sub-compact SUV. A variant of this platform is also rumoured to be used for the 2021 Renault Kwid-based sub-4m sedan.
