American auto giant Ford’s Indian wing has unveiled a newly developed 3-cylinder 1.5 litre Ti-VCT petrol engine at the company’s Sanand plant in Gujarat. This all-new 1.5 litre Ti-VCT petrol mill is internally known as the Dragon engine from the company’s new engine range. This move of Ford India confirms all the speculations that have been going on for months that the company will be introducing a new petrol engine from its Dragon engine family. This naturally aspirated petrol motor will be debuting in the Indian market under the hood of the new updated Ford EcoSport, which is expected to launch soon.

The new 1,497 cc 3-cylinder petrol engine has the capability to churn out a max power output of 120 bhp at 6,500 rpm along with a top torque of 150 Nm at 4,500 rpm. Thus, this engine offers 10 bhp of power and 10 Nm of more torque than its 4-cylinder counterpart. While, turbocharged engines are in trend in the recent time, this new engine from the house of Ford is a naturally aspirated one, and has been paired to an efficient 5 speed manual transmission gearbox, while a 6 speed automatic transmission gearbox option will also be there. This new petrol mill is also lighter, more compact and thus more fuel efficient as compared against the older 4-cylinder 1.5 litre petrol engine. This new Dragon engine is offering improved power by 10 percent, while also offering increased torque by 7 percent as compared against the 4-cylinder Ti-VCT petrol mill, while also being more fuel efficient at the same time.

Ford has created this all-new engine by using all-aluminium block which comes with an integrated exhaust manifold. According to Ford, this has reduced the overall dimensions of the engine while also decreasing the Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH) level of the engine. Moreover, the integrated manifold also allows the catalyst to heat up more rapidly and hence, it helps in reducing emission levels. The engine’s timing belt is also oil dipped to keep it lubricated and results in the reduction of general wear and tear.

This new Dragon petrol engine from Ford also comes with other innovations as well, which includes an offset crankshaft by 10 mm that decreases amount of friction and in the process enhances efficiency, as per the reports. There is also a coil-on-plug system that essentially means that each cylinder of the engine comes with an individual ignition coil. There are also hydrodynamic bearings to get rid of the vibrations that are usually related to the other 3-cylinder engines. The engine also comes with an extra balancing shaft to make up for the lack of one cylinder.

The newly developed Dragon 3-cylinder 1.5 litre Ti-VCT petrol engine will be manufactured locally in India at Ford India’s Sanand facility. The new petrol engine will not only be used for the domestic models in India, but will also be exported to the international markets.
