Most cars sold in India will ignore a momentary touch of the start-stop button when the vehicle is in gear, moving above a certain speed (5-10kmph), or actively accelerating. The system assumes the press was accidental and rejects the command.

2. Long Press Can Lead To Engine Shutdown

Depending on the brand and model, pressing and holding the button for 2-3 seconds will force the engine to shut down even while moving. This is a built-in emergency function. When this happens, you may notice one or all of the changes mentioned below:

• Power steering becomes extremely heavy
• Brake pedal becomes harder
• The car coasts in neutral (in automatic cars)
• Safety systems like ABS remain functional  

Simply put, you will not lose control of the vehicle instantly. But you will require far more effort to steer and brake, especially at higher speeds.

3. Steering Lock Will Not Activate

Even during a forced shutdown, the steering lock will not engage until the vehicle comes to a complete stop, enabling you to still control the direction in which your car is headed, albeit with more effort.

What Happens If I Press The Start-Stop Button While Parked?

When the car is stationary, the button behaves normally:

1. If The Engine Is Running

A single press will turn the engine off and switch the car into accessory mode. Electronics such as the infotainment system, power windows, cabin lights, electronic tailgate, etc. will remain active for a short time.

2. If The Engine Is Off

Pressing the button without the clutch pedal (in MT cars) or brake pedal (in AT cars), will typically turn on the accessory mode. It will not start the engine.

Tips To Avoid Pressing The Start-Stop Button By Accident

Accidental presses are uncommon, but you can reduce the chances further with a few simple habits. If you’ve bought a new car with a push-button start-stop system, it is important to familiarise yourself with the button’s position. 

Most cars I have driven and tested have had the start-stop button on the right side of the steering column, out of reach from other passengers. But in some cars, they are in close proximity to the headlamp controls or the headlamp leveller dial. In such cases, it is important to familiarise yourself with all the controls of the car so that you can control and adjust various features without taking your eyes off the road.

A few cars, like the Ford EcoSport facelift, have the push-start button to the left of the steering wheel, in close proximity to the infotainment system. Some cars may also have the start-stop button located on the centre console, next to the gear lever, electronic parking brake toggle or the drive mode dials. In such cars, drivers have to be mindful of the button’s position while reaching for the touchscreen to enable navigation, play music or adjust the volume, or while activating the electronic parking brake or adjusting drive modes. 

Ultimately, push-button start-stop systems have multiple safety layers to prevent accidental engine shutdowns. A quick tap does nothing at all while driving. Only a long, intentional press can stop the engine. And even then, the car allows you to safely steer and brake until you come to a stop.

Technically, yes. Aftermarket winged headrest cushions exist. However, they are usually strap-on pillows, not actual winged headrests.
